Learning in Year 3

The Year 3 students have settled into the school year beautifully. They have worked hard to establish classroom routines, organise their books, and set themselves up for a successful year of learning. We have also spent time getting to know one another, sharing stories about our summer holidays and building positive classroom relationships.
Literacy
In Literacy, we have begun our Spalding Spelling program, focusing on phonogram knowledge, revising spelling rules, and practising correct handwriting formation. Students have been exploring narrative writing, learning about sizzling starts, using complete sentences with capital letters and full stops, and adding a variety of adjectives to make their writing more engaging. We have also started working with reading NAPLAN-style texts, answering comprehension questions and becoming familiar with the language and structure of NAPLAN-style questions.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have been playing number games to build fluency and confidence. Our focus has been on addition and subtraction fact families, strengthening mental strategies, and beginning to practise NAPLAN-style questions.
Integrated Studies
Our Integrated Studies theme this term is One Country, Many Stories. We have started learning about Indigenous history and Dreamtime stories. Students have enjoyed reading indigenous texts such as Somebody’s Land by Adam Goodes and have created their own Wominjeka hands using the Aboriginal flag to represent welcome, respect, and belonging.
Do you know what each of the colours represent on the Aboriginal Flag?
It has been a wonderful start to the year, and we are very proud of how positively the students have embraced their learning.
