Sustainability @ TPPS

Another year of fun in Sustainability has begun!

Firstly a massive thank you to all the volunteers who cared for our hens over the summer holidays and kept them cool and safe. We had some very hot days and it was great to know that such dedicated families were looking after our hens.

If you would like to be part of a “chicken cooling crew” that could be called upon on very hot days, please email me: lori.conn@education.vic.gov.au

How it works - in advance of extreme heat days, I put a call out to the group to see who is available to make some ice and frozen fruit and take it in for the hens. There is no pressure, just if you are free to help on that day.

Grade 5 are working on speeches for Sustainability. They will be presenting these to different classes around the school, explaining how our system of bins works, and how to be the best “waste-free school” we can be. To support us, you can provide your child with a package free “nude-food” lunch box every day. Any packaging that comes to school in a lunchbox or is bought from the canteen needs to be taken back home to dispose of.

Grade 6 are collecting an empty soft drink bottle with a lid each by next week. This is to create their own hothouse for growing lettuce seedlings. It takes a long time to grow a lettuce, so they will need patience and dedication!

We are very proud of the way our Preps have started their school life with such enthusiasm and confidence! For their first Sustainability lesson, the Preps learnt about our school chickens - Blossom, Cinnamon, Bumblebee, Henny Penny, Ginger and Pumpkin - and then made their very own chickens to take home. Such clever kids!

It’s Summer - the season when the Blue Tongued Lizards are out and about trying to find a mate. We have seen one wandering around near our canteen. If you see it, please don’t touch it, just let it walk away. Watch out for them sitting on roads or lawns and be careful not to run them over.
