Past the Halfway Point!
We’re well into the term now, and the learning and activities across Sacred Heart are in full swing. A big congratulations to our students for their incredible effort during a busy and challenging testing period. Sustaining focus over such a long time wasn’t easy, but they handled it with determination and resilience. Well done to all!
English
Year 6
Year 6 students have wrapped up their exploration of Us Mob, culminating in detailed character analyses of the book’s main characters. They are now diving into the world of nonsense poetry with our Jabberwocky unit. Students are examining the playful use of language, discussing the meaning behind the fantastical words, and creating their own nonsense verses inspired by Lewis Carroll's iconic poem.
Year 5
Our Year 5 students have just started their new novel, Dirrarn, the sequel to Black Cockatoo, which they read last term. This story continues to explore important themes, providing an engaging context for developing their reading and writing skills. Alongside this, they have been honing their public speaking skills as they prepare their leadership videos. These videos give students the opportunity to showcase their confidence, creativity, and communication skills.
Mathematics
Year 6
After completing their unit on area, perimeter, and volume, Year 6 students have progressed to fraction operations. They are developing their understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with fractions through practical problems and activities.
Year 5
Year 5 students are continuing their work on data and statistics while also exploring probability and the addition of fractions. These topics are helping them build strong numeracy skills and apply them to real-world scenarios.
Topic (Science & Technology)
Both Year 5 and Year 6 students continue to engage deeply in our coding and technology unit.
Year 6
Year 6 students have been focusing on unplugged coding, where they have learned to create sequences through activities like cup stacking. They’ve also explored the importance of debugging in coding during their "how to make a sandwich" lesson, where they had to instruct their robot teachers to make a sandwich. Next week, they’ll transition to “plugged” coding using Makey Makeys, where they’ll bring circuits to life with creative and interactive projects.
Year 5
Year 5 students have completed an exciting hands-on project: the Playdough Piano. By using foil and playdough, they built functioning pianos, learning about circuits, conductors, and the science behind how electricity flows. It was a fun and memorable way to understand these concepts.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Extra-Curricular Activities
District Basketball
Our Grade 6 basketball team gave it their all in the district competitions. Although they didn’t progress further, their hard work and teamwork were a credit to Sacred Heart. Well done, team!
State Athletics
A huge congratulations to Maddie in Year 5 for winning the State Athletics High Jump! Maddie achieved an incredible jump of 1.46m. What an outstanding effort—well done, Maddie!
Swimming Program
Our intensive swimming program kicked off this week and runs Monday to Thursday over two weeks. Students are refining their swimming techniques and learning essential life-saving skills. While the kids are having a fantastic time, you may notice some tired faces at home—it’s all part of the fun!
Memory Books
A reminder: As part of their farewell to Primary School, the Year 6 students will be creating Memory Books. These scrapbooks will reflect on each year of their primary school journey, featuring written pieces (completed both in school and as part of homework) alongside any photos they wish to include.
We kindly ask parents to provide their child with a blank scrapbook (it doesn’t need to be anything fancy), as well as any materials they would like to use for decorating. Please also supply photos from your child’s primary school years—whether they are from school events or casual moments, all are welcome!
