Reading

In reading, the grade 3/4s have been continuing to learn about text structures and features. This week we have been focusing on the problem/solution text structure. We have identified how authors include a problem, a series of events and a solution in narratives. It has been fun reading lots of picture story books and identifying the problem and solutions within the texts.

In writing, grade 3/4s have started to write narratives. We used our knowledge of genres, characters and settings to brainstorm ideas for our stories. Students then created a plan before beginning to draft their narratives. They have learnt how the beginning of narratives need to 'set the scene' by introducing the characters and describing the setting. It has been great being able to draw upon our knowledge of the problem/solution text structure that we have been learning about in reading.

Maths

In maths, the grade 3/4s have continued to learn about tenths and hundredths as decimals. We have represented these numbers using pictures and placed decimals on a number line. We have also compared and ordered tenths and hundredths.

We have also revised the place value of 4 and 5 digit numbers. Students have used their understanding of renaming to identify 1, 10, 100 or 1000 more or less than a number. We have also ordered collections of 4 and 5 digit numbers and compared numbers using greater than and less than symbols.

Inquiry/SEL

In Inquiry, the grade 3/4s have continued to explore the continents of South America and Africa. We have also been practising our online researching skills by finding out the answers to questions about these continents and identifying similarities and differences between them. We also completed our African kente (paper weaving)!

In SEL we have revised our school values: respect, kindness and working together. It is important that we continually think about and discuss how we are displaying these values so that we all feel safe and happy and also make the most of all learning opportunities. Students completed activities which have encouraged them to reflect and make personal goals relating to our school values.
