Congratulations to the Year 8 Girls at the SSV State Table Tennis Championships!
A huge congratulations to the Year 8 girls' table tennis team who recently competed at the SSV State Table Tennis Championships, held at MSAC Albert Park. After securing the EMR competition win, the team was determined to give their best performance at the state level. Despite the busy VCE exam schedule limiting access to the table tennis area, the girls made time to train before school and at lunch, showing their commitment and passion for the sport.
The competition began with a tough match against Cathedral College Wangaratta. After the singles, the score was tied 2-2, but the girls' strength in doubles came through. They played confidently, supported each other, and won both doubles matches, securing a 4-2 victory over Cathedral College.
Next up was a more intense challenge against Bayside P-12. After a tough singles round, the team found themselves 1-3 down. Despite the close nature of each match, Bayside won the crucial points. The doubles matches went to the maximum of 5 games, but ultimately, Brentwood lost 2-4.
The team’s third pool match was a must-win against Chairo Christian School from Leongatha. With their eyes on the semifinals, the girls played with determination. Incredible rallies were exchanged between both teams, but Brentwood ultimately triumphed with a 5-1 victory.
Having finished second in their pool, Brentwood advanced to the semifinals, where they faced Mernda Hills Christian College. The game was tough, and after the singles, Brentwood found themselves 1-3 down. Despite their best efforts, and the incredible support and encouragement from both teams, Brentwood lost 2-4, meaning they would not make it to the state final this year. But the girls kept their spirits high and vowed to come back even stronger in 2025.
Special thanks go to Angie Nikolova and Kristina Dew, members of the Senior Girls State Champion team, who came to support, encourage, and assist with scoring.
Your experience was invaluable.
Once again, well done to all the girls! You’ve shown great teamwork, sportsmanship, and resilience.
We're all looking forward to next year's competition!

Year 8 Softball State Representatives – Congratulations!
A huge congratulations to the Year 8 girls' softball team for being invited to compete in the SSV State Championships! After a quick turnaround from the EMR competition, we managed to squeeze in two more training sessions, focusing on our fielding and communication skills. The team also had the opportunity to play an indoor match against the Year 7 team, who also qualified for the State Championships – it was great preparation for what was to come!
The girls were eager to experience the high level of competition that the state finals offer. After our warm-up, our first match was against Frankston High School. It was a thrilling game that ended in a narrow loss for us, 17-18. The highlight of this match was an incredible triple play by Brentwood – a very rare and exciting moment in Year 8 softball. With the bases loaded, our fielders caught the hit, threw to third, and then to second to get three outs in one play. It was a truly memorable moment!
In our second match, we faced Viewbank College. Our girls were in great spirits, and they played an outstanding game, winning 27-19. The highlight of this match was a spectacular home run that sent 4 girls across the plate, a huge achievement!
Heading into our final match against St Albans SC, we were feeling confident with one win and one close loss under our belts. Unfortunately, the match ended in a tough loss, 3-24. Despite the result, I was incredibly proud of how the team maintained their spirits and played with great determination throughout.
A huge congratulations to all the team members for their hard work, excellent sportsmanship, and positive attitude. A personal highlight for me was that we managed to beat the school that ultimately went on to win the State Championships! Well done, girls!
We look forward to the journey ahead in Term 1, 2025 – the journey begins again soon!
Team Members – Sophie Annett, Chloe Cai, Libby Chew, Mia Denney, Sierra Gibb-Derkacz (injured – number 1 base coach), Snigdha Pegallapati, Finley Rowe, Madison Rowe (injured), Eleanor Scheppokat, Emily Thompson, Kayla Tran, Hailey Waga.

Year 8 Girls Tennis
The team recently competed at the EMR competition, where they demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and determination across three scheduled matches.
In their first match against Rowville Sports Academy, the team gave it their all, but unfortunately, they were defeated 6-0. In round two, they faced Box Hill High School, where the girls showed great improvement and settled their nerves, winning more games than in their first match, although they were still defeated 6-0.
For their third match, the team was scheduled to play Norwood Secondary College, but they were fortunate to receive a forfeit, giving them extra practice time on the spare courts. The girls made the most of this opportunity by watching the doubles matches between the other schools and continuing to refine their skills.
A big thank you to Mrs Cornelissen for her fantastic coaching and management of the team, and to our student coaches Anton Jusayan and Lulu Yao for their dedication and inspiration. Your support was invaluable!

PE Footwear Reminder
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This is a reminder that students should be wearing appropriate footwear to PE classes. Students should be wearing sports runners with adequate grip on the bottom of their shoes. PE classes are completed on a wide range of surfaces including, but not limited to, gym floor, asphalt and grass, also in a variety of weather conditions.
Shoes should be worn that allow students to participate safely across all terrain. PE staff make decisions on a daily basis, whether it is safe to complete classes, students need to wear shoes that are appropriate for all scenarios. If shoes are deemed inappropriate, students may be unable to participate. Students should not be wearing street or lifestyle runners to class as these shoes do not provide adequate grip and support.
Please see below images for shoes that are appropriate for PE classes and those that are not appropriate for PE classes.

Competition Sports Uniform
With interschool sport competitions, some teams must wear sports tops with numbers and special-coloured sports socks. Brentwood provides these tops and socks. However, sometimes students wear these tops/socks home instead of handing them back to the teacher in charge at the end of the day. So, as you spring clean or change your bedroom layout during the term break, keep an eye out for any missing Brentwood Sport Specialised team uniforms. So, drop them off to the main office or the PE staffroom when you return. No questions asked!
We are hoping for Brentwood AFL jumpers, Soccer/Hockey/Volleyball/Basketball numbered tops, and navy long socks to be found and returned!

Brentwood School Sports
Brentwood competes in the School Sport Victoria (SSV) program. We are a successful school due to the commitment of students and staff to the program.
Staff volunteer their time to provide opportunities to the students to get involved.
Students can learn new skills, develop tactical thinking within a competitive environment, meet new friends, build rapport with staff outside the classroom, demonstrate leadership skills through student coaching, display good sportsmanship no matter what the outcome, and most of all students can grow as a person.
Brentwood look the part when we go out to compete. When we arrive at a competition, other schools know exactly who we are; as we arrive as a team and we look like a team. Students wear our sports uniform with pride.
We have a strict uniform policy. If you are part of a Brentwood team you look like a Brentwood student. We wear our sport uniform: Brentwood polo, Brentwood navy shorts, Brentwood navy track pants, Brentwood rugby jumper, Brentwood jacket, Brentwood hat, white socks, and appropriate footwear. We do not wear casual clothing or other teams clothing. We represent Brentwood.
We enter teams into all SSV competitions and compete within the Monash Division.
Our local competition come from Wheelers Hill Secondary College, South Oakleigh College, Wellington Secondary College and John Monash Science School.
Winning teams then progress to the Eastern Metropolitan Region (EMR) round robin competitions, and successful teams from EMR compete at the SSV State Championships.
Communication is via the Compass portal. Consent and payment for events must be completed via compass. Consent must be finalized by 11.59pm two school days prior to the event/excursion. If a student does not have consent and payment is not complete before this time, they will not be permitted to attend. Unfortunately, some students do miss out.
We also like to celebrate student sporting achievement. We would love to hear about your child’s super special milestones and achievements in their chosen sport. A quick email is all that it takes : sports@ms.brentwood.vic.edu.au
I do hope that you encourage your child to try a new sport through the many opportunities at Brentwood to get involved. Even if they do not make a team, they have learnt new skills and developed abilities during the selection trials and trainings.
We also love to have supportive parents attend sporting events.
So feel free to come along and cheer on Brentwood throughout the year.

PE uniform reminders:
Below are some PE uniform reminders:
- Years 7 – 9 may wear their PE uniform all day on days in which they have PE. This is made known to students by having GYM1, GYM2, GYM3 etc. for their “room” location. On days where students have Health, they are required to be in their academic uniform.
- Year 10 students may only wear PE uniform if they are completing either PE elective (Enhanced PE or Sports Science) on the days their teacher has selected for them to complete their practical classes for the week. Students will be given uniform pass cards from their teacher which will list what days these practical classes are on. Students are to carry these card at all times. If a student is in PE uniform on a day that a practical class is not on or cannot present their card then they will receive a uniform chronicle.
- Year 11 and 12 students are to change into and out of their PE uniforms for periods that they have a practical class. If students have PE in period 1 they are allowed to come to school in their PE uniform and will change at the end of this period. If students have PE in period 5 they will need to change at lunch time and are permitted to leave school in their PE uniforms. If students have practical classes in period 2, 3 or 4 then they must be changing in and out of their uniforms during that classtime. If a year 11 or year 12 student comes to class in their PE uniform and they do not have a practical class in that period then they will receive a uniform chronicle.
