Year 10 Students Participate in St. John's 'Party Ready Program'

Over a two-day program, Year 10 students were divided into two groups to participate in the St John’s ‘Party Ready Program’. This program focused on equipping students with the essential tools and knowledge to assist their friends if they are injured, unwell, or in a distressed situation. The sessions covered critical skills, from CPR and psychological first aid to tips on staying safe at parties. The aim was to empower students with the confidence to de-escalate situations and intervene appropriately when necessary. Students engaged in practical activities, such as placing someone in the recovery position, practicing CPR on mannequins, and using cannabis goggles to simulate the impairment caused by drugs. These hands-on experiences helped to reinforce the importance of quick thinking and appropriate action in emergency situations.

Coming into the festive season it is important that we all keep safe when it comes to parties and drinking alcohol.

Top 8 Party tips to keep yourself and others around safe:

  1. Plan ahead – Arrange transportation or have a plan for getting home safely.
  2. Eat well while drinking – A full stomach slows the absorption of alcohol.
  3. Buy your own drink and don’t leave it unattended – If you think your drink has been tampered with, do not drink it.
  4. Never get into a car with a driver who has been drinking.
  5. Stay hydrated – Drink water between alcoholic drinks to prevent dehydration.
  6. Tell a friend or family member your location – Stay connected and share your plans.
  7. If someone is unconscious, lay them in the recovery position – This keeps their airway open and helps prevent choking on vomit.
  8. If someone stops breathing, start CPR immediately and call an ambulance.
