Dear Parents and Students,

As I write this article our new Year 10 students are walking into the building to take part in their course confirmation for 2024. This group comes from nearly a hundred schools statewide, and it is great to see a number of students from rural Victoria again joining JMSS.

The next few weeks see several events and opportunities for our students including the Australian Science Fair Engineering Immersion, Global Challenges and UN Day. Following these events is the orientation program for 2024 current Year 10 and 11 students. Students will be able to get a “head start” on their courses for 2023 by familiarising themselves with VCAA study designs, background material and assessment styles. All students will have some tasks to complete over the break to better prepare themselves for the upcoming academic year.

Year 12 Results

All students completing Year 12 subjects in 2023 are able to access their results on the 11th of December. We do hope that all students completing Year 12 subjects will achieve results that match or exceed their expectations.

For year 12 students there have been several communications via compass and emails to inform students about the processes related to change of preference and early round offers. Change of preference closes at 4.00pm on Wednesday 13th December and early round offers are released on the 21st of December. There are opportunities to book into counselling sessions with Ms Carter to discuss Year 12 results and Change of Preference. These have also been communicated to students.

Year 11 students wanting to pursue a University Extension subject in 2024 have a week to submit their applications after Year 12 results are released. It is important to get these applications pre-filled out prior to December 11. Forms can be handed to the VCE managers anytime from now.

Olympiad Summer School

Congratulations to Nicola Marwick, Joel Tan and Archie Halliwell who have received invitations to attend the Australian Olympiad summer schools based at ANU in Canberra over January. The summer schools will be run face to face and attract students who have performed exceptionally well in Olympiad Competitions from all over Australia. Hopefully these three students will go on to represent Australia in Olympiads overseas in 2024.

Jazz Night 2023

The annual Jazz Night was held last Thursday (photo below) and once again it was characterised by high quality performances from many highly talented JMSS students. It was great to see that the event was really well attended by parents and past students.  Congratulations to the Music staff for putting on such the event and our music students for their energy and enthusiasm.

Finally, I would like to congratulate Abbie Goff and the student magazine team on their efforts in completing another brilliant school magazine this year. Again, the magazine provides excellent coverage of all the events and achievements that have characterised the 2023 JMSS year.
