Happy International Day of the Potato - May 30th!

The theme of International Day of Potato in 2025 'Shaping history, feeding the future' acknowledges the potato’s deep historical and cultural significance and its evolving role in today's global agrifood systems. And how fitting because this week our gardening club planted some indigenous plants in our school yard.

You can see our Bush Tucker Garden area begin to take shape near the passive play area outside the year 4 classrooms and Art and STEM rooms. Our students will be continuing to dig holes, plant, water, mulch and take care of these plants. Some of our students are looking forward to smelling the Chocolate Lilies, others are waiting for the berries!

Bush tucker and native plants attract native wildlife in the form of birds, bees or larger native animals which is important for maintaining healthy ecosystems in our environments. In STEM, students have been learning about minibeasts - so hopefully we will be lucky enough to see some of these animals visit our garden soon. We are also looking forward to introducing a worm farm into our school garden over the coming weeks and building on our school sustainability practices in regard to rubbish, recycling and composting. I would like to thank Bunnings Broadmeadows for kindly donating the worm farm to our school.

So, if you are a part of the 2/3 of the world's population that consumes potatoes as its staple food; may you enjoy your Friday night Fish ‘n’ Chips, your Sunday night roast spuds, the bangers and mash or however else you choose to enjoy them. Have a fabulous weekend and happy international day of the potato to you!

As always, feel free to reach out with anything sustainability at SOGS related!
