On Thursday 1st May, eight Year 7 and 8 students, four from the Cranbourne campus and four from the Clyde North campus, represented St Peter’s College at the FUSE Cup Mario Kart Competition, held at Genazzano FCJ College.

The FUSE Cup is a global esports competition for schools which provides students with an opportunity to participate in safe, inclusive, supportive, and structured school-based esports competition. Throughout the day, students are also encouraged to demonstrate good sportsmanship and develop positive habits surrounding their online behavior.

With a total of 64 competitors, the day commenced with a round of heats, with five out of eight St Peter’s students made it through to the qualifiers. Two students then advanced through the qualifiers and were successful again in the quarter finals. Unfortunately, the two St Peter’s students, Darcy M and Logan P, faced off in the semi-finals, with Logan making it through to the finals.

The winner of the final would be the competitor who scored the highest points across four races. As the runner up of last year’s competition, Logan was hopeful he would be the champion of the day and everyone in the St Peter’s team had their fingers crossed for him. After the first two races, Logan was in an excellent position and all our heart rates were high. His performance in the final two races was not as strong, however, he ended up with the most points overall and took out the win for the day! Logan is to be congratulated on this outstanding achievement.

As the winner of this competition, Logan is now invited to compete in the 2025 FUSE Esports National Finals on the Gold Coast in November. All St Peter’s students involved on the day are to be commended on their sportsmanship and should be proud of their efforts.

There are still five more FUSE Cup competitions to come this year, including events for Mario Kart, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros. and Just Dance—so students are encouraged to keep an eye out for tryouts for upcoming events.

SIS Public Speaking Competition

On Thursday 9th May a team of Junior, Intermediate and Senior students attended the SIS Public Speaking Competition. This event brought together schools across the region to showcase the power of student voice through both prepared and impromptu speeches.

Students spent a week crafting and refining their prepared speeches, tackling topics that were personal, persuasive and thought provoking. The Juniors considered the ever-present conundrum of whether it’s better to blend in with the crowd versus standing out, while Intermediate students reflected on their favourite thing about living in Victoria. The Senior team discussed an example of leadership and the most important freedom to them. In the impromptu round, students rose to the challenge of thinking on their feet, speaking with poise and purpose in response to surprise prompts with only five minutes to prepare. This required quick thinking, strong communication skills, and self-belief; all of which our students displayed with maturity beyond their years.

Each student demonstrated remarkable confidence, creativity and passion. A special shoutout to Antonio Alonday and Saumya Nepal for scoring an incredible 80 and 81 respectively in the impromptu speeches, and Sam Jacob with a Clyde North high score of 76 in the prepared speeches.
