Reminders:
Laptops need to be charged and at school every day.
Weeks 1 and 2 saw the Level 3 students really settle into their learning and become excited about what they will be learning during Term 2. So far, the teachers have observed a huge shift in the maturity and enthusiasm of the students especially for their learning. This is wonderful to observe and it is also great to see the progress of each and every student.

Literacy
In Literacy we have been learning about the Etymology of words which is the origin of how words were formed. The students have found this very interesting and fascinating as the majority of words were formed from Latin, French and Greek. We are also practising choral reading and Fluency Pairs which is oral reading and ensuring that the fluency improves with each oral reading session. At home, please make sure your child is reading out aloud at least once a week.
Additionally, students are now using dictionaries to look up the meaning of unfamiliar words and then writing these words in sentences to convey understanding. In Grammar, we are learning about the spelling rule 'i before e except after c' and of course the exceptions! During our Core Literacy time we are learning about the root word 'port' meaning 'to carry'. We are learning to add prefixes and suffixes to create different words. Eg: prefix trans (through, across) + root word port (to carry) = transport (to carry through, across).
Maths
In Maths, we have been concentrating on Place Value, renaming numbers as well as using arrays for further understanding of multiplication and division strategies. The students have commenced learning their 4 x tables, Factors and Prime Numbers.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, the students are learning about geography, resources and sustainability. We have started to learn about rocks - igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Ishani (3A) used her knowledge and interest in etymology to discover that igneous comes from the Latin word ignis meaning fire. Igneous rocks are formed by fire. She shared this with the class and most students started to have that 'a ha' moment where they could start to understand how the name related to the meaning of the rock.
We are hoping to make more links during the term between the scientific vocabulary and the origins of the words.
GEM Chat - Discuss how you are feeling about the commencement of Term 2.
We have started to look at Gratitude and how we can "focus on what we have" and not on what we don't have.
