Level 2: Connect

Welcome to Term 2

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We’ve been so impressed with how smoothly students have settled back into routines and transitions. Term 2 is shaping up to be a fun and busy one, full of engaging learning experiences and exciting opportunities ahead!

Core Literacy

In the first two weeks of school, students have been diving into exciting new phonics learning.

In Week 1, they explored the "ph" digraph, which makes the /f/ sound—found in words like photo and elephant.

In Week 2, they investigated the spelling pattern "stle", as seen in words like bustle and castle. Although it has four letters, the "t" is silent, and it’s pronounced /sl/.

It’s been a great start to building strong decoding skills!

For the next two weeks in Core Literacy the students will be learning

Week 3: students will be learning the digraph /ey/, the prefix /mis/ and learning the heart words: found, brown and different.

Week 4: students will be learning the digraph /wr/, the prefix /in/im/ and learning heart words: picture, large and school.

Inquiry Focus: Echoes from the Past

This term, our Year 2 students will be exploring the past and learning how we can use objects, pictures, and stories, called artefacts and information sources, to help us understand what life was like long ago. The Year 2 students will be encouraged to think about how these clues can tell us about the people who lived before us, and how their lives might have been different or similar to ours today.

As part of this learning, students will also investigate important places and buildings in our local area. They will be encouraged to ask big questions like: Why are these places special? What can our community’s stories teach us about how things have changed over time? This unit will help students connect history to their everyday world and understand that the past is all around us, often in places we see every day!

A great weekend activity could be to explore the local area, look at the different land formations along the beach, find some monuments or memorials and identify important buildings. Maybe you could even locate some of the places in the photographs!
