Foundation: Connect
Term 1 2025
Reminder: Hats for recess and lunch times.
Dear Foundation Families,
Term 1 was a success and we have jumped into a busy Term 2. Students have returned to school with ease which has been great to see.
We have a few reminders that we would like to share;
Numeracy
Over the past fortnight, our Foundation students have been busy developing their mathematical thinking through a range of engaging activities. We’ve been exploring ordinal numbers—learning how to identify who is first, second, third, and so on in everyday situations. Whether it’s lining up at the door or choosing a book, students have been using language like “at the front”, “at the back”, and “in the middle” to describe positions in a queue.
We have also introduced the concept of part-part-whole relationships. This involves understanding that numbers can be broken into parts in different ways—for example, knowing that 5 can be made from 2 and 3 or from 4 and 1. This foundational idea helps students make connections and build a strong number sense.
These understandings have led us naturally into learning about addition. Students have been developing their addition skills through fun and interactive games such as Wipe Out and Race to 100. These games encourage quick thinking and mental computation, and students are really enjoying them. Why not ask your child to teach you one of these games at home? It’s a great way to share in their learning and have some fun with numbers!
Literacy
Students continue to work their way through the alphabet. In Week 1, we focused on j & v. In Week 2, we have focused on w, e & x. Casting forward to Week 3, we will be looking at k, y & z.
We have focused on new heart words 'for' and will be moving onto are in Week 3 'are'.
We are learning to use our letter chart to help make informed letter/sound choices for our spelling. We are continuing to construct basic sentences using these. We are also encouraging students to make more independent attempts through introducing Dictation into our Core Literacy sessions.
During Literacy from a reading and writing lens, we have been looking into the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts, learning to make predictions and sequence key parts of stories. Over the term, we will be focusing on Fairy tales which is described as a children's story about magical and imaginary beings and lands; a fairy story. Over the coming weeks we will be looking at; The Three Little pigs and Little Red Riding Hood. Along with using picture prompts to generate independent story lines.
We are excited to begin our library sessions in Week 4. In order to borrow a book students must have returned their book from the previous week, and must have a library bag. Many of these were given back to the teachers early term 1 which was great. They were the red ones that came with the books to keep at home however, you are welcome to bring a different library bag if needed.
