Teaching and Learning

By Trudy Gau

Welcome back to Term 2. It's been great seeing everyone back at school and getting on with lots of new learning.

Student Learning

The Level 5 and L6 students have started the term in science by using their creative skills. They have been learning about adaptations in science. They have taken a habitat from around the school and created a creature that may live in that habitat using the 6 types of adaptations. Below are some photos of the work created by some of the L5 and L6 students.

 Decodable Reading Books

In Weeks 3 and 4 our students in Foundation to Level 2 will not be taking home decodable reading books as we are in the process of completing an audit. From Week 5, students will continue to bring a decodable reading book home.

Decodable reading books are specially written to support children as they learn to read through phonics. These books use carefully selected words that match the letter-sound patterns students are learning in class. At SEPS, students are taught structured synthetic phonics skills during the core literacy block, and decodable books give them the perfect opportunity to apply these skills in real reading situations. By sounding out words and reading sentences independently, children build confidence, fluency, and a strong foundation for lifelong reading success.

Students also have a Wushka account that they can log into if they wish to access decodable reading books during this time.

Thank you for your patience, while we complete the audit.

Teaching and Learning

This week, our staff had the privilege of attending a valuable workshop led by our Koorie Engagement Officer, Steph Briggs, who is working with schools across the Bayside area. The workshops focused on deepening our understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, and perspectives. It provided important insights into how we, as educators, can ensure that the voices, experiences, and contributions of First Nations people are respectfully represented and meaningfully embedded in our teaching and school environment. We are committed to creating a more inclusive and informed learning space for all students.
