Year 3 - Mathematics

Year 3 Maths

In Term 2 so far, the Year 3 students have been focusing on fractions. They have been exploring a range of activities to help them understand fractions using symbols (e.g. ½ , ¾), words (e.g. half, third, quarter), parts of a collection and parts of a whole (shape or real life objects).

They also learned the importance of fraction terminology, such as ‘equal parts’, ‘numerator’, ‘denominator’, ‘mixed fraction’ and ‘improper fraction’ when completing learning tasks.

Students created a fraction wall and folded paper to help them understand equivalent fractions. This followed with them learning to add fractions with a common denominator. Students also explored a hands-on activity to answer the question, “What fraction of a bottle needs to be filled with water to be the best for bottle flipping?”

Here are some things that the Year 3 students have to say about fractions:

What is something interesting that you learnt about fraction?

Eric: "The numerator is the top number and the bottom number is the denominator. The denominator tells you how many parts there are in a whole."

Tauriel: "Improper fraction is when the numerator is bigger than the denominator."

Ryan: "Equivalent fractions are two fractions that are the same but they have different numerators and denominators."

Stephen: "You can find equivalent fractions by multiplying the denominator and numerator by the same number."

Olivia: "You can turn improper fractions into a mixed fraction."

Alice: "You can split one whole into many different pieces, as long as they are all the same."

We are just over a third of a way through Term 2, and there are many more exciting Math learnings to come for the rest of the term!
