Grade 5 - 6

Reading

Students have been exploring the different techniques that illustrators use when composing visual elements in a text. They have been analysing a variety of images and have explored techniques such as the use of ‘salience’, ‘framing/angles’ and ‘vector’. In addition to this, students have been studying the text named ‘Drought’ by Jackie French. They have been focusing on interpreting the language devices used by the author such as synonyms and figurative language, analysing the structure of the text and how it is a fusion between an information text and poem while also anticipating the targeted audience and the impact the author aims to have on its readers.

Writing

Narratives are always an exciting genre for writing and our grade 5/6 students have thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this text type. Students have focused on sharpening their writing by showing character traits and personalities through events, actions and dialogue, detailing setting by including descriptive language that incorporates the five senses and building suspense and tightening tension towards a climax. Students have continually made connections with multimodal narrative based texts and have used these experiences to maximise the engaging nature of their written narratives.

Maths

5/6 students have been engaging with mathematical concepts that include volume and capacity and shape. They have been building a range of shapes that have varying volumes and sharing their own strategies to efficiently calculate the volume of these shapes. They have had to use their understanding of other mathematical concepts such as multiplication, simple algebraic formulas and measurement to calculate these volumes and discuss problems that revolve around volume. Student have also been constructing multiple 3D shapes using nets, wooden skewers and blue tac while also exploring the different features of these 3D shapes.
