Literacy
Our Prep students have had an exciting two weeks exploring the books "Wendy" and "Slinky Malinki."
In "Wendy," our young readers followed the adventures of Wendy, a daring chicken who joined the circus and wowed everyone with her amazing motorcycle tricks. As they dived into the story, they learned new words like extraordinary, gathered, revved, fearlessly, tingled. These words became part of their writing, adding excitement to their retells of Wendy's circus escapades.
In "Slinky Malinki," they met Slinky Malinki, a sneaky cat who loved to cause nighttime mischief. Our young readers expanded their vocabulary with words like wicked, heaved, and tangled.
During 'turn and talk' time, students shared their thoughts and opinions about these stories, enhancing their understanding and critical thinking skills. We're proud of the progress they've made this term, and we're excited to see them continue to grow as readers and learners.
Maths
Last week in Maths, our young mathematicians had a blast delving into the world of basic 3D shapes, including cubes, spheres and cylinders. We discussed the unique features of these shapes and went on exciting hunts to find them in objects all around our classrooms, learning community and school. Check out the fantastic marshmallow cubes we created below!
This week our focus shifted to sequencing steps in order. To make this learning extra enjoyable, we played board games that involved following instructions in a specific sequence. Our students worked in pairs and small groups, following the game rules to move from the start to the finish. Along the way, they also had a chance to make use of their number knowledge to 20 and directional knowledge of left and right.
Other
This week students have explored social learning on how to make friendly decisions in a range of situations. We looked at words and actions that can affect other people's feelings and how we can be a great friend. The Preps are continuing to discuss and write about their ‘favourite’ things, with this week's focus being our favourite animals. They are learning to write multiple sentences discussing what their favourite animal looks like, what it does and why it is their favourite. Students are also engaging in mindfulness activities where we are focusing on how to recentre ourselves and using a toolbox to ensure we are working in the green zone.
