Class of 2023 - Graduation Ceremony
This year's Graduation Ceremony was held on Thursday 14 December and was a wonderful success!
Writing in R1
This term students in R1 have been hard at work learning new topics and revising ready for the end of year. Students have kindly welcomed a new teacher and have been working on maintaining strong friendships in the class.
In English this term, the primary focus has been Exposition Writing (opinion witting). The students loved reading the Pigeon series of books to form an opinion and practice writing our opinion. Some of the topics were ‘Should we let the pigeon drive the bus’, ‘Does the pigeon need a bath’ and ‘Should the pigeon go to school’. You can see examples of the amazing writing samples and Pigeons who took over the classroom below!
We also used the mentor text ‘The Day the Crayons quit’ to practice opinion writing. The task was to choose a coloured crayon and develop a reason for why we quit. Some of our reasons are hilarious!
In Maths this term, the primary focus was on Place Value, counting in groups of ten, and identifying the Tens and Ones in two-digit numbers. Students learnt that each numeral in a number has a specific place and meaning for how many groups of ten and how many ones. One of the games we played was the place value dice game, where you roll two dice to create the Tens and Ones, (and sometimes hundreds), place them in a Hundred, Tens or Ones column and whoever makes the highest number, wins.
The class have also been revising skip counting, time and measurement. Recently, the focus has been on length and height. We know that length is how long and short something is, and height is how tall or short something is. We have measured objects in our classroom using informal units such as Unifix Cubes. One of the activities was to measure the height of our classmates using these cubes. We had great fun working out the best way to measure. See us below measuring each other.
This week, we have been celebrating the end of the year, and getting ready for next year 😊
O2 - Visual Arts Collage
The students in O2 have been experimenting with collage.
What is a collage? A collage is a type of artwork where different kinds of materials are glued onto a surface to create a picture. Collage is a French word meaning gluing.
They have explored Henry Matisse’s the snail piece and Patrick Nelson’s abstract collage.
Their favourite was assemblage: assemble + collage = assemblage
Assemblage is a group of things that are collected and put together to create an artwork.
