CURRICULUM FOCUS

This week in our Respectful Relationships lesson we are focusing on understanding the concepts of ‘rights’ and ‘responsibilities’.

VOCABULARY

Rights:

Are what every human being deserves, no matter who they are (regardless of gender, colour or race)

or where they live, so that we can all live in a world that is fair for everyone.

Human Rights:

Every human has the right to:

• be free

• feel safe

• be protected from harm

• be able to learn and grow up to be the best person that they can be.

Responsibility:

A duty. Often this duty is towards others, but also to ourselves.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Together with your child, build a list of examples of some of the key rights that children should have.

For example:

• The right to education

• The right to health care

• The right to clean air and water and healthy food

• The rights to safety and to privacy

• The right to leisure and play

Invite your child to also identify some rights that they have at school. Discuss these.

Invite your child to discuss responsibilities that they have at school. Identify whether they are a responsibility to themselves or others and discuss how these differ from rights.
