Deputy Principal, Teaching and Learning

 - Mrs Susan Bradbeer

This week students are immersed in our Step-Up Program.

Students in Emerge (Years 10-12) will be able to begin working through a new study design, course content and the expectations for assessment. Students are encouraged to complete early sign up for EDROLO, a series of additional online resources that support their VCE study. Please refer to the parent/guardian letter from Mrs Kym Dempsey, Head of Library, for further information.

Students in Years 8-9 will have early access to their course outcomes and individual teacher’s expectations.

All class OneNotes will be set up during Step-Up so students will have access to online resources to complete any holiday homework requirements.

Summer Holiday Learning: Parents often ask how they can help their child prepare for the upcoming academic year.

  • Our English staff would encourage students to read the set English texts over the summer break prior to in class reading and study. You might like to read the texts at the same time and open some discussion over family dinner. For students doing long travel, an Audible subscription might allow them to listen to their texts in the first instance.

  • Keeping up to date with what is happening in local, national, and global news is also vital. Have you considered subscribing to The Squiz? Podcasts Archive | The Squiz This provides you with a range of interesting updates about current affairs.

  • Students who are familiar with journalling also find this a useful process to document new learning, ideas and inspiration. For information about how and why we journal this New York Times article might pique your interest. What’s All This About Journaling? - The New York Times (nytimes.com)

  • Here are some educational YouTube channels to review:

MinutePhysics (all kinds of cool physics)

CrashCourse (history, chemistry, astronomy, and much more)

AsapSCIENCE (science topics ranging from biology to psychology)

  • Learn a new language for fun or consolidate your French or Chinese: Duolingo

  • Brush up on your study habits

At The Hamilton and Alexandra College, we encourage lifelong learning. So, learning on your summer break should be something you anticipate and embrace with curiosity and a sense of fun.

Be on the lookout for additional communication in the coming week about Senior School Reports which will be available to download on SIMON via the Parent Access Module (PAM).
