Mt Arapiles Camp

Year 9 Camps

Rock climbing! Abseiling! Camping under the stars! Brekkie wraps (and wrap shaming!) every morning! Long, hot, sweaty bus trips! Hiking! Waterfalls! Fun fun fun!

What a week we had, as nineteen tenacious students accompanied by three enthusiastic teachers ventured into the Wimmera last week! We did not know all the adventures that would await us nor all the fatigue and, sometimes, pain our bodies would endure. Was it hard and challenging at times?? Yes! Do any of us regret undertaking this adventure - not at all!

Our week was filled with activities that pushed us to realise our own personal strength and determination. For the majority, rock climbing in nature was a first. Bushranger’s Bluff, Mt Arapiles, provided the stunning setting for this to happen. Whilst the rock walls appeared inhospitable, they had many crags and crevices that allowed us to hitch our bodies all the way to the top of the climb. The favourite climb for many was into the cave, where students could swing out to their heart’s content, feeling the freedom of flying through the air!! This soon became a competitive game to see who could climb to the cave the fastest!

Day two saw us visit Mitre Rock for another day of extra challenging climbs that extended on the skills developed the day before. For the more adventurous, a clamber and climb to the south side summit warmed up the nerves before they were officially tested when we abseiled down! An absolutely unforgettable experience, where you found yourself alone, suspended 30 metres in the air, enjoying the challenge and views offered in this most spectacular of places. The feeling of pride and accomplishment as feet hit terra firma was sensational!

The next few days were filled with exploring spectacular scenery of the world renowned Grampians. We hiked to the top of the Pinnacles and it felt like we were literally on top of the world with 360 degree views. Science lessons were provided along the way as we discussed just how these incredible rocks we were walking along were formed. We also enjoyed a less dramatic and steep walk to Fish Falls where we experienced the roar and grandeur of a fully flowing waterfall. For many, it was an introduction to how loud a waterfall can be and how cold the water is!

This year’s student group must be commended on the way they approached the camp. They demonstrated grit, determination, patience and teamwork with their classmates and teachers. They supported each other to overcome fatigue and fear, offering encouraging words, a kind smile and many a congratulatory pat on the back. This was witnessed every single day. This made us, their teachers, incredibly proud. We have taken away many fabulous memories. We hope the students also have many proud moments they can hold on to and reflect on moving into Year 10.
