Sienna's Insights

This year, I was lucky enough to be able to help with the Art & Technology Showcase for 2023. I was so impressed by all the hard work by the team to create this incredible Showcase. We had our talented curator, Yang, to help us with the planning, all of which turned out great - looking absolutely fantastic to fit the Alice in Wonderland theme.

Miss Thompson did an outstanding job co-ordinating the whole event.

What went through your mind when you first arrive at the showcase to view the gallery?

Kevin: As usual, I was blown away by the quality of the work. We have some very talented students who could easily make a career out of the art/technology skills that they demonstrate in the showcase. There was so much to look at, it was hard to know where to start.

Phoenix: The lighting at setup created a great atmosphere that suited the event.

Were there any exhibits this year that particularly stood out to you?

Kevin: I like the introduction of the baking section which I thought was a highlight. That magical chair that seemed to be floating in mid air was great, the artwork, the garments, the list goes on and on...

Phoenix: The lawn chair looked really cool and so did the experimental table by Lachlan Peck.

Mr Murphy, it’s art and technology showcase tradition that you open the showcase with a grand gesture. Last year we had the pink lemonade tower, and this year it was entertaining card trick. What was your inspiration and how did you prepare?

Kevin: To be honest I was told to do the card trick opening, but that was it, so the rest of it was completely improv! Nothing like having to come up with something on the spot!!!

Phoenix, as the award recipient for Year 11 Systems Engineering, can tell us first of all what systems engineering is?

Phoenix: Systems Engineering analyses organizational systems to find more efficient ways of doing things. Typical activities include: Analyzing system challenges and identify the best solution to meet project needs. Systems Engineering also focuses on improving quality of life for a large audience of people. Taking a project from conception to completion.

And, what was your project, and what inspired you?

Phoenix: Tony and I designed a motorized wheelchair that had the ability to go up steep slopes and is able to overcome obstacles. Many wheelchair bound people around the world are required to wheel themselves around all day on sometimes non-wheelchair friendly paths, it was because of this that Tony and I decided to design and create this wheelchair design.

Seeing what everyone has created in our Year 11 & 12 Art & Technology subjects has inspired me to work just as hard in my upcoming VCE Art Subject, I hope my peers were equally inspired.

Hope you all have a great Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.
