Maths
The Grade 6 students will begin working on units relating to Measurement, focusing on Volume and Capacity. We will be determining appropriate units of measurement to use and solve problems to identify the volume and capacity of 3D objects and prisms. We will also be focussing on elapsed time and solving problems relating to that. In Number we will be reviewing multiplicative strategies and. We will also be completing a Statistics and Probability unit relating to chance, where students will conduct experiments and analyse data. Students will continue to build on their automatic recall of multiplication facts through daily fluency sessions. Testing will also take place to inform teachers for reports.
Reading
During Term Four students in Year 6 will be undertaking a novel study based on the text ‘The Explorer’ by Katherine Rundell. Students will be unpacking the author considerations for the text and techniques. There will also be opportunities for students to identify themes, summarise the text and discover interesting and new vocabulary. Together with the teacher, they will set individual reading goals and have the opportunity and support to practice applying specific strategies in their independent and small group reading tasks. Students will also be tested on their reading comprehension and fluency during individual conferences and online testing.
Writing
Throughout Term Four students will be looking at two writing genres, writing to persuade and writing to instruct. Firstly, students will be writing persuasive texts on a topic of their choice, considering current issues in society. Students will need to research their topic, use evidence to support their viewpoint, follow the correct structure and clearly explain their topic with the use of technical vocabulary. Students will also refine their work to ensure there is correct punctuation and sentence fluency for the text type. Students will also write an information text that explains how to play a game or how to complete a task. Students will be required to have clear explanations and steps to describe outcomes. An opportunity to write a poem for Graduation will also be given later in the Term.
Inquiry
Year 6 students will undertake a unit exploring Light and Shadows. Students will discover the impact of these and experiment with the how light and shadows behave. Students will also be learning about Health and the changes in their body as they reach adolescence. Discussions on physical, emotional and social changes will be addressed as well as values and responsibilities.
Wellbeing
We are looking forward to continuing to enhance our wellbeing this term with the continual implementation of the Resilience Project. Students will explore the importance of gratitude, empathy and mindfulness through a series of carefully planned and targeted learning experiences. Students will also undertake sessions following the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships. These sessions will touch on emotions, human rights and ways to encourage respect between their own and different genders.
Performing Arts
This term Grade 6 students will be exploring a variety of musical options before deciding on their Graduation dance songs. Each class will vote on their preferred song and then work as a team to choreograph and rehearse a dance to be shared at the end of year Graduation celebration. Towards the end of the term students will also begin rehearsal for our Kismet Christmas Carols picnic which will showcase performances from all year levels.
Visual Arts
This term in Visual Arts, students in Year 6 will investigate Printmaking, creating collagraph prints using cardboard or foam glued onto a cardboard background. They will identify symmetry and learn about positive and negative shapes.
Students will explore paint as a medium as they produce water colour and acrylic paint works of art. They will learn about ‘pop art’ and ‘portraiture’ while exploring repetition, proportion, shadows, and colour contrast.
Students will make stuffed toy monsters as they discover Threads and Textiles. They will design their monster and make it by using ‘running’ stitch to join fabric and add details.
Japanese
This term in Japanese, Year 6 students are developing their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills through the topic “Weather”. They are learning how to read and write 6 weather types in Japanese. The students are also learning how to write 8 Japanese cities in Kanji (Japanese alphabet). They will learn to read and write sentences describing the weather of different Japanese cities. The students will also revise Japanese numbers and learn how to say the temperature of different Japanese cities. Students will revise numbers, colours and greetings and continue with learning to identify hiragana (Japanese alphabet), using these characters to read and write words in Japanese.
Students will also learn about the cultural event, Health and Sports Day held in Japan and participate in a scavenger hunt to celebrate this event. They will work with partners to locate Japanese colours and hiragana characters around the schoolyard.
PE
This term students will be given the opportunity to play a variety of team games using a ball. The focus will be on team work, good sportsmanship, accepting an umpire’s decision and using strategies to improve performance. Games will include Tchouckball. Table Tennis and European Handball.
