BEYOND PHONICS

Our staff are very much looking forward to our Spelling PD this week as we explore morphology (the smallest units of meanings in words such as ‘re’ and ‘un’), etymology (the history of words) and how these two important components can impact pronunciation and spelling of words.

As part of this deep dive into words, we thought we would share some etymology about high frequency words, thanks to Jasmine Shannon from the Reading Science in Schools initiative for her wonderful resources.

We hope that they provide some insights into how and why some words in English might seem so irregular, when we solely focus on current pronunciation.
