It has been a fantastic semester in the school garden! We kicked off the term by building new garden beds and getting everything ready for our big spring planting. Along with our usual favourites—tomatoes, basil, chilli, zucchini, cucumber and snow peas—students were excited to experiment with growing corn and beans this year. They also planted a dedicated sunflower bed and a colourful patch of flowering plants to help support local bees.
Throughout the semester, we explored how gardening can play an important role in improving food security. Students completed a design brief task where they created a dish featuring vegetables, fruits or herbs harvested from our very own garden. Their creations were impressive and diverse—ranging from fresh takes on Italian classics like pizza and pasta, to Asian-inspired stir-fries and nori rolls, and even some very creative stuffed tomatoes and carrot-bun burgers.
It has been wonderful to see students experimenting with new flavours and discovering that silverbeet is actually pretty good after all!
