Year 5/6 - Newsletter

Dear families,
It’s been a busy and exciting few weeks, and we can’t believe how quickly the term is flying by! The students have been doing an amazing job—showing fantastic effort, teamwork, and plenty of creativity in everything they do.
This week, we’ve kicked off our assessment tasks, and it’s been wonderful to see just how much progress the students have made. Their hard work throughout the year is really shining through, and we couldn’t be prouder of their growth and commitment to learning.
Inquiry – “I Am a Consumer”
This week our inquiry focus is “I Am a Consumer.” Students have been exploring the concepts of goods and services, and discussing how these shape the world around us. We’ve been investigating what it means to be a responsible consumer. Lots of thoughtful conversations are happening as students begin to connect what they buy, use, and value in everyday life.
Mathematics
In Maths, we’ve continued to deepen our fractional thinking. Students have been building on their understanding of fractions and making links to percentages, exploring how these concepts appear in real-world contexts. From shading shapes to calculating sale prices and data sets, our mathematicians are becoming more confident in comparing, converting, and representing parts of a whole in multiple ways.
English
Literacy Circles are off to a great start! During Weeks 1 and 2, students have met in their groups to discuss their novels, share insights, and ask deep-thinking questions. The level of engagement and enthusiasm has been fantastic.
In writing, we’ve begun crafting a persuasive letter to the Arctic Council about the conservation of polar bears. Students have planned and written their introductions and first body paragraphs using the PEPS structure (Point, Explanation, Proof, Summary). They’re working hard to use strong evidence and persuasive techniques to convince their audience to take action for this important cause.
SLIP
Our Year 5 students in the SLIP program have been asked to prepare a short speech to share in Week 6. Each student is writing a 40–60 second speech about what the SLIP program is and what it means to them. They’ll first present their speeches within their SLIP groups, and a few students will be selected to share their speeches at an upcoming assembly. We can’t wait to hear their ideas and see their confidence shine!
SEPEP
Our Kickball Tournament is in full swing! The competition has been lively and spirited, with students showing great teamwork, sportsmanship, and strategy. It’s wonderful to see everyone encouraging one another and embracing friendly competition.
