Year 3/4 - Newsletter

Dear parents,
Oodies, PJs, crazy hair, and slippers were all the fashion last Friday! Roll Out of Bed Day was a huge success, filling the day with smiles and giggles all around!
What's happened in 3/4 this fortnight?
English – We have continued our Structured Literacy novel study using The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. Throughout the term, students have been exploring new and exciting vocabulary, refining their grammar skills, and applying a range of strategies to expand sentences and write persuasive texts. In Morphology, we have focused on the suffix -ness (meaning ‘state or quality of’) and the root -tract- (meaning ‘to pull’ or ‘drag’). In Grammar, students have been working on upgrading verbs and nouns within an argument to strengthen their persuasive writing. They have also begun planning and drafting their introduction and first argument for a persuasive letter, convincing their parents either to get — or not get — a robot!
Maths – Over the past fortnight, students have continued exploring fractions during our Fractional Thinking unit. We began by representing and identifying equivalent fractions using fraction bars, focusing on the connections (e.g between thirds, sixths, and twelfths). Students then moved on to representing fractions on number lines, counting by fractional parts, and recognising equivalent fractions in different forms. Building on this, they learned to place fractions and mixed numerals accurately on number lines, fill in missing fractions, and convert between improper fractions and mixed numerals.
We then applied these understandings using arrays to find fractions of a set, helping students see how fractions relate to multiplication and division. In our most recent lessons, students extended this further by finding equivalent fractions of a set using unit fractions and their multiples. They identified equivalent fractions, calculated fractions of sets, and used their growing knowledge to solve a range of fraction problems.
These sessions have helped students strengthen their fractional reasoning and deepen their understanding of part-whole relationships in fun and meaningful ways.
Inquiry - This week in Inquiry, we investigated what is everyday life like in Africa and South America compared to Australia. We looked at the similarities and differences between places in terms of their type of settlement, demographic characteristics and the lives of the people who live there.
Students should have now completed the first three components of their project (‘Starting out’, ‘Country Statistics’ and ‘Culture’). The ‘Characteristics’ section is due to be returned to us by NEXT Friday 7th November. We are more than happy for homework to be completed BEFORE the assigned date. We encourage students to be up to date each week by following the checklist, ticking off as they go and having a parent/guardian site and sign their work each week.
Friendology/Wellbeing - This week we have continued Unit 7 of The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships Curriculum, which is ‘Gender Norms and Stereotypes’. Our focus over weeks 3 & 4 have been looking at the following:
- Exploring gender stereotypes through stories
 - We can challenge gender pressures

Also, during this term, we will be revisiting our lessons around coping with change, stress management, friendship skills and the importance of kindness.
Camp - We are deep into organising our camps. Please ensure you have completed and returned any medical forms. If you are in need of one, please contact your classroom teacher as any medication taken must be given/sighted by an adult. There will be spare forms available on the morning of camp.
Please note the ‘Packing List’ is up on Compass, giving you plenty of time to get organised.
School Stationery - Your child's 2025 spare stationery has been sent home in preparation for 2026 Book Lists. We hope that this will assist you with the purchase, knowing what spares your child/children currently have.
