Year 5/6

English

This week in English we finalised our Term 4 class novel, 'The Last Bear'. Students explored the themes of friendship, conservation and courage. They were able to craft a text response to demonstrate their understanding of the book, utilising evidence from the text. Students also drafted and published a persuasive letter to help save the endangered polar bear population.

Maths

Over the past few weeks, they have been learning how to translate, reflect and rotate shapes on a grid, using correct mathematical language and reasoning. Students have also been working with the Cartesian plane, plotting coordinates, creating shapes and applying transformation rules across all four quadrants. This has helped them develop strong spatial awareness and a deeper understanding of how shapes move and change position.

Humanities

Over the past two weeks, students have been exploring the three levels of government in Australia — federal, state and local — and learning about the different roles and responsibilities each level holds. They’ve had great discussions about how government decisions affect our daily lives and who represents us in parliament.

Students are now working in pairs on a research project, where they will gather information and create a slide-show presentation (or similar). Their task is to present their findings on topics such as government roles, how citizens are impacted, representatives in their area, and how federal parliament works. We’re looking forward to seeing their creativity and understanding shine through in their final presentations.
