Year 1/2

Literacy
In Literacy, students have been learning about fairy tales and the genre of fantasy. Students have been looking at the key features of a fairy tale, including how we can create engaging problems and solutions for our stories, write with description by using our 5 senses, and create detailed characters. Student have also been learning about dialogue! This is an advanced skills for students in 1/2, however we wanted to challenge them with this. We have been so impressed with how students are remembering the many steps and punctuation rules when using dialogue to enrich their stories.
Students have been working on a large piece of writing, where they have drafted, edited and published a fairy tale of their own. These will be put in students black display folders along with all of their other fantastic work!
Maths
This term in Maths, we have been busy exploring two big areas of learning - fractions and time - through lots of hands-on, real-world activities.
In our fractions unit, the children have been investigating fractions of shapes, lengths, and collections. From cutting fruit into halves and quarters to folding paper strips and sharing collections of objects, the focus has been on helping children see fractions as fair shares in everyday situations. These practical tasks have built a strong foundation for understanding how parts make up a whole.
Our learning around time has connected beautifully with our fractions learning. As students explore the days of the week and months of the year, they are also exploring how we divide time into smaller parts - determining how a week is made of seven equal days or how a clock face can be split into halves and quarters. This has helped them make meaningful connections between the two areas.
Throughout the term, we have also taken time to review and revisit key concepts from earlier this year. This will help to strengthen understanding and build confidence as the children apply their knowledge in rich and practical ways.
Humanities
In Humanities this term the children have been learning about health and safety messages, and have been exploring how they help to keep us safe and make good health and wellbeing choices. They chose an area of interest to them and had a go at creating their own health and safety message to display around the school community.
Over the past week we have begun a new unit focusing on sustainable practices, with a focus on sustainable practices that can improve the health and wellbeing of our class and school. We have looked into sorting waste in the classroom, where this goes and why this is important. It is lovely to see how engaged the children are with this unit particularly and how passionate they are about protecting their local environment. :)
1/2 Stay Late
Last week our wonderful Year 1/2 children enjoyed our very special stay-late evening at school - and what a fantastic time they had! The excitement kicked off with party games and a lively round of Kahoot, followed by creative fun as everyone decorated their own t-shirts. After that, the children settled in to watch Lilo & Stitch, sharing popcorn, pizza and lots of laughs with their friends and teachers.
It was lovely seeing the whole group together, and the smiles said it all - a great time was had by everyone.
A huge thank-you to all staff and families for helping make this memorable night possible! :)
A HUGE BIG WELL DONE 🥳🏊
The 1/2 teachers would like to take the time to congratulate the grade 1/2 children on a fantastic week of swimming at the Geelong Aquatic Centre! Throughout the week, the children showed wonderful respectful behaviour, impressive organisation of their personal belongings, and remarkable patience as they navigated busy change rooms, listened carefully to instructors and supported one another.
As the week went on and tiredness began to set in, the children demonstrated real resilience, giving their best effort right to the very last session.
We are so proud of the way they represented our school - congratulations!
