Year 3/4
Reading
Students are diving into the creative world of Graeme Base, exploring books like 'The Legend of the Golden Snail' and 'The Last King of Angkor Wat'. Students will look closely at the pictures and words in these books to understand more about the characters and events. They will also learn how the author uses his artwork and writing style to create certain moods and themes. Throughout the term, students will practise asking and answering different types of questions to help them understand the stories better and think more deeply about what they read.
Writing
Students are learning how to craft their own stories (narratives). They are practising how to come up with interesting ideas and use their own experiences or favourite books as inspiration. Teachers are helping students find their author’s voice by choosing words that show their style and make their stories enjoyable to read. They are also learning how to organise their writing to include a clear beginning, middle, and ending. Throughout the term, students will use descriptive words to help readers imagine the characters and settings in their stories.
Maths
Students are continuing to build their skills in addition and subtraction. They are learning different ways to solve problems, such as using blocks (MAB), number models, and strategies like partitioning, compensation, and constant difference to make numbers easier to work with. They are also practising how to explain their thinking and show their working using number sentences and diagrams. Students are learning about location and transformation. They will be looking at maps, as well as exploring symmetry, flips, and turns to understand how objects move and change position in space.
Inquiry
Students are working on their own passion projects. Each student has chosen a topic that interests them and will spend time researching and learning more about it. The focus of this project is to help students develop their questioning and research skills. They are learning how to ask clear, open-ended questions to discover new information, rather than sharing what they already know. Through this process, students are becoming more independent learners who can explore ideas deeply, think critically, and share their findings with others in creative and meaningful ways.
Common Interest Groups
This term, students have again been enjoying our Common Interest Groups, where they can explore activities they love with others who share the same interests. These groups give students a chance to be creative, collaborate, and try new things while building new friendships with different classmates.
Year 3 Sleepover
Earlier this term, Year 3 students had a school sleepover! They spent the night at school, watched movies, played games, and had lots of fun. For many, it was their first night away from home, helping them feel more confident and prepared for next year’s three-day camp adventure.
