Second Reading: 2 Timothy 4:6–8, 16–18

As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

At my first defence no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Summary

In this letter, St. Paul reflects on his life of faith. Even though he faced many challenges and was abandoned by others, he never gave up. He trusted that God was always with him, giving him strength and courage. Paul sees his life as a race — he has given his all for God and now looks forward to the eternal reward of heaven. This reading reminds us that faith isn’t always easy, but when we stay strong and trust in God’s help, we can face anything. Like Paul, we can say, “I have fought the good fight; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith.”

Reflection Questions

  1. What does it mean for me to “fight the good fight” and “keep the faith” in my life right now?
  2. When have I felt God giving me strength during a difficult time?

Prayer

Faithful God,

Thank You for being my strength when I feel weak.Help me to stay faithful, courageous, and hopeful like St. Paul.

May I always trust that You walk beside meand lead me to the reward of Your everlasting love.

Amen.
