Student Leader Spotlight: Kaaviya
Kaaviya—a loud, emotional, and empathetic Year 12 student whose passion for leadership and education has left a lasting impression on the school community.
From Hambledon Public to HSC Excellence
Kaaviya began her academic journey at Hambledon Public School and is now completing her HSC with a diverse and challenging subject mix: Tamil Continuers (accelerated), Biology, Maths Advanced, English Advanced, Community and Family Studies, and Legal Studies.
A Prefect with Purpose
Kaaviya was selected by staff in the second round of prefect appointments, a role that has allowed her to pursue meaningful goals for the benefit of the school. Inspired by the positive changes she witnessed from past senior leaders, Kaaviya is determined to contribute to the school’s legacy and create lasting improvements for future students.
Leading with Heart
Among her proudest accomplishments is the execution of Teacher Appreciation Week, where heartfelt letters were delivered to staff. “Seeing every teacher’s face light up with genuine happiness was incredibly rewarding,” she shares. On a personal level, Kaaviya values the friendships and connections she’s built through leadership—bonds that may not have formed otherwise.
Senior Leadership in Action
Kaaviya’s leadership extends beyond the classroom. As a Senior Leader, she has proudly represented the school in:
- Macquarie Zone Athletics
- Sydney West Athletics
- Macquarie Zone Netball
Her involvement in these events reflects her commitment to teamwork, resilience, and school spirit—qualities she brings to every aspect of her leadership.
Passion Over Pressure
Balancing schoolwork, leadership, and extracurriculars is no small feat, but Kaaviya approaches it with joy. “I find my leadership role a passion,” she says. “I complete my duties during study breaks and entertainment time because I genuinely enjoy collaborating and innovating for the growth of our school.”
Inspiring Passion in Others
Kaaviya encourages her peers to embrace leadership with enthusiasm and authenticity. “If you truly wish to be a leader, take every opportunity to try to be one and prove your worth as a leader by helping those around you. As a basis to everything, be passionate for your role,” she advises. For her, leadership is about enjoying the process and committing to positive change.
A Future in Education
Rather than changing her career goals, leadership has affirmed Kaaviya’s dream of becoming a primary educator. Working closely with peers and teachers has given her insight into planning, collaboration, and the importance of balancing structure with creativity—skills she looks forward to applying in the classroom and beyond.
A Cultural Obsession
A fun and surprising fact about Kaaviya? She’s incredibly obsessed with Indian cinema—especially Tamil movies. “It’s always been a way for me to feel connected to my culture and heritage,” she says. “It’s shaped who I am, from my favourite music to my love for cinematic masterpieces.”
Advice for Aspiring Leaders
Her advice to younger students is simple and powerful: “If you truly wish to be a leader, take every opportunity to try to be one and prove your worth by helping those around you. Be passionate about your role.”
A Legacy of Joy and Belonging
When she graduates, Kaaviya hopes to leave behind a school environment that students look forward to coming to and dread leaving. “School becomes a symbol of happiness and memories,” she says. “I want to enhance those experiences.”
Looking Ahead
After Year 12, Kaaviya plans to study primary education at university and hopes to join an exchange program to travel, learn new cultures, make friends, and collect unforgettable memories.
