What’s New with the NDIS?
Over the past year, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has made several significant changes aimed at improving clarity, sustainability, and fairness.
1. New Definition for NDIS Supports
- From 3 October 2024, a new legal definition of what constitutes an “NDIS support” came into effect.
- The change means only items on the official NDIS Supports List can be funded with NDIS money.
- There is also a Non-NDIS Supports list: some things can no longer be funded under ordinary NDIS supports.
In limited circumstances, participants can request a substitution from a “replacement supports list” if a non-NDIS item is considered more cost-effective or appropriate.
2. End of the Transition (Grace) Period
- To help people adjust, there was a 12-month transition period where the NDIA did not immediately raise debts for mistaken claims under $1,500.
- That grace period ended on 3 October 2025. After this date, if you spend NDIS funds on items that aren’t on the approved list, there is a risk of being asked to repay.
- There are “safeguards” in place, but participants and providers need to be more careful now.
