Socktober Day for Catholic Mission-Monday 27th October
On Monday we held our Socktober Day for Catholic Mission. The colour and creativity of the crazy socks worn by the students was amazing. The day began with a Liturgy in the Church around the theme of Mission which was beautifully led by our Year 6 RE Student Leaders and their Year 5 Team.
Following this, students worked with their buddies to make sockballs. Sockballs are basically balls made of scrap materials such as old socks, clothes, string, plastic etc...
The teamwork on display was next level as they all knew that the better quality the sockball the easier the next challenge would be. The challenge was that for every $1 donation they made, they had the opportunity to try and kick their sockball through the hole in the target. The higher their year level, the further back the target was. If they managed to kick their sockball through the hole, their name would have been added to a special list. The names on this list got a free zooper dooper every time we sell them after school later this term. Many students stepped up to the challenge, some were very close but alas the challenge proved too difficult. Better luck next year.
More importantly, we managed to raise $309.30 for Catholic Mission. This money will provide project support to critical church-run initiatives in Africa, Asia, Oceania and South America, as well as remote dioceses within Australia. Well done OHR.

Family Led Sunday Mass
During 2025, the Parish in conjunction with the Parish Primary Schools, has planned Family led weekend Masses. These Masses will be celebrated once a term and be followed by hospitality. They will be a great opportunity for children and their families to be involved in a Mass within the parish community.
Family Masses will provide an opportunity for families to come together and to support each other in faith. They can particularly be important for families who are presenting their children for Sacraments throughout the year. There may be opportunities to reconnect with our own faith as adults. There may be opportunities to engage with parish life and learn more about the faith, for those who are not so familiar with our local worshiping community. All families are welcome at these family Masses no matter what your religious background or affiliation.
Family Masses scheduled for later this year are:
Sunday, 16th November at 10.30am (OHR Church) - Note Change of Date/Time
Prep, Year 1 & Year 2 and new families for 2026 are particularly invited to this Mass.

This term we have commenced exploring what discipleship means for us today Being a disciple means following and believing in the teachings of Jesus. Mary is known as the first disciple and the virtues (qualities) she demonstrated (from before the birth of Jesus to after His ascension into heaven) are ones we would like to base our lives on.
Some of the virtues Mary demonstrated are:
- Kindness
- Caring
- Forgiving
- hard working
- Leader
- Bravery
- Generous
- Honesty
- Fairness
- Loving
- Gentle
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew
Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up the hill. There he sat down and was joined by his disciples. Then he began to speak. This is what he taught them:
‘How happy are the poor in spirit:
theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Happy the gentle:
they shall have the earth for their heritage.
Happy those who mourn:
they shall be comforted.
Happy those who hunger and thirst for what is right:
they shall be satisfied.
Happy the merciful:
they shall have mercy shown them.
Happy the pure in heart:
they shall see God.
Happy the peacemakers:
they shall be called sons of God.
Happy those who are persecuted in the cause of right:
theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
‘Happy are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kinds of calumny against you on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.’
Discussion Questions
1. In today’s Gospel Jesus invites us to go to him if our burdens are heavy and he will help us. What sort of burdens or troubles do you ask Jesus to help you with?
2. Have you ever prayed about a problem? What happened?
3. Today we pray especially for the souls of people who have died, that they might spend eternity with God where they will be happy forever. Can you think of anyone who has died? 4. What do you think heaven is like for them?
5. Jesus has promised us eternal life if we follow him. How do we do that?
