Get to know our 2025 Academic Captains

Name: Daniel Kelly

Role: Foley Academic Captain

What do you want to do when you leave school?

When I leave school, I plan to study at UQ in the Law and Economics area, however, I haven’t fully decided on my specific course.

Best study tip you use?

A helpful study tip is to always make a start on assignments the day they are given out. Even if it’s just some research into the topic or making a title page, this gets you motivated and helps with stopping procrastination.

When do you most like to study? Why?

My go to time for studying is between just after lunch and before dinner, around 2:00pm-5:00pm. This way I feel energised and motivated to work after eating lunch, and also keep the nighttime free for relaxing or going out.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

Something I, as well as many of the other Academic Captains, am looking forward to is starting back up a number of extra-curricular programs that were affected due to COVID-19 and encouraging everyone to get involved.

What would you spend your last $20 on?

I’d spend my last 20 bucks on 100 balls at Vic Park.

Spelling Week

Our Academic Captains have organised a Spelling Week for Week 6. We have two main events for students to get involved in -

  • We have our Great Spelling Race happening during Pastoral Group time. In the last ten minutes of PG, three spelling words will be called out over the loudspeaker and PGs will race to spell these correctly and run their answers down to a location in the College.
  • On Friday, we have our Great Spelling Bee in the Gym. Every student will receive House Points for participating, so the more students there, the better!

Watch this space for the results.

ICAS Mathematics – Medal Winner

Congratulations to Cooper Williams (Year 6) who has been awarded an ICAS Gold Medal for his achievements in the Year 6 Mathematics test. This means that Cooper was in the Top 1% of Australia and had the highest score in our region.  A huge accomplishment!  Well done, Cooper.

Year 11 Academic Conversations

This week the Year 11 Academic conversations continue. Parents and our young men of Year 11 are invited to chat about their progress through Units 1 and 2, to see a way forward in preparing for Units 3 and 4. For boys on an ATAR pathway, you will be given an ATAR Estimation range with a print-out of how this is calculated. There is room on this document for students to take notes – it is suggested that students bring a pen with them to these interviews. Bookings have now closed – for any issues with making a booking or existing bookings, please contact curriculum@marash.qld.edu.au.

Year 7-11 Assessment Schedules

Assessment schedules are available on Student Cafe, Parent Lounge as well as the Orbit App (School Links > Assessment Information). Your son is encouraged to download this schedule and transfer assessment dates to his College Diary Term Planner and any home planners, to ensure he is managing his time effectively.

Please remember that assessments during Exam Block will be scheduled at some point across that week.  The exact timing of these exams will be released in the Exam Block Schedule which will be released this week.  If boys are absent during the Exam Block and consequently miss an examination, they will be required to submit a medical certificate in alignment with our College Assessment Policy. They will complete the assessment once they return to the College, which could be on the day they return. No exams in the Exam Block are sat early.

Any Year 10 students who have unapproved leave at the end of the year (eg. family holidays, non-representative sport trips, etc.) and cannot complete examinations on their return will be issued a summative grade of NR (No Result) for the subject on their end of semester report. This is in line with QCAA policies.

Release of 2024 Year 12 subject results and Senior Education Profiles (SEP) to students

From 9 am on Wednesday 11 December 2024, Year 12 students who have completed a QCAA subject in 2024 can access their final subject results and SEP from their learning account in the Student Portal via the myQCE website at https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au. Depending on students’ individual circumstances, their SEP will comprise one or more of the following documents:

  • Senior Statement
  • Statement of Results (students who have completed a QCAA subject but are not in Year 12)
  • Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE)

SEPs are issued as electronic documents and stored in students’ learning accounts. Students can save their SEP on a computer or mobile device and provide it to third parties electronically or they can download it as a secure PDF and print it. Electronic SEP documents in students’ learning accounts are official documents. They contain an embedded digital signature to confirm they are authentic, and they cannot be altered. If students download or print their SEP, an employer or further education provider can scan the unique QR code on the document. This will direct the user to a unique QCAA webpage confirming the SEP’s authenticity. For more information see www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/assessment/results/authenticating-a-certificate.

Please note the QCAA nor the college will print student SEPs. The QCAA will provide an option to request a printed copy of their SEP, and this will become available in the Student Portal when SEPs are issued and will close on 31 January 2025. SEPs will be posted during March 2025. Printed copies are free. SEPs printed by the QCAA are no different from those that students can print for themselves and are not official documents. They are provided for students’ convenience only.

Academic Integrity

With assignments due it is important that students are reminded about the nature of academic integrity.  All students in the Middle School have completed the QCAA Academic Integrity course as part of their ASH lesson.  This course taught our students about effective academic practices, ways to improve their work as well as understanding academic misconduct (particularly plagiarism and the use of AI) and how to avoid this.

Please continue to work with your son to ensure that the work he submits is his own.  Failure to do so is academic misconduct.
