Smiles all round after a visit to the dental van. The wonderful Rhiannon & Liam from Smile Patrol attended St. Mary’s College on Monday 28th– Thursday 31st October.
Students had an oral examination, clean & scale and learnt lots of valuable information about keeping their mouths healthy. Some students also had x-rays & treatment for teeth that needed extra love & care. Rhiannon & Liam were very gentle and explained everything as they went. Students were introduced to each tool before it was used and lots of reassurance ensured the visit was fun, with nerves quickly turning to laughter. For many students, it was their first time visiting the dentist and seemed to be a positive experience all round.
John ... “This is incredible. I didn’t know teeth had nerves” when seeing an x-ray of his teeth.
Jack... “I couldn't stop smiling all recess showing off my clean teeth to all my friends!
Montana... “This is the coolest I have felt in my entire life” when putting on the sunglasses before her turn in the dental chair.
Recommendations for a healthy mouth:
🪥 Brush & floss your teeth and gums twice a day.
Rhiannon suggested pairing teeth brushing with another habit to help it stick
_ brush your hair in the morning, brush your teeth.
_ put your pyjamas on before bed at night, brush your teeth.
🪥Visit the dentist every 6 months.
🪥Drink plain water & milk. Avoid soft drinks, energy drinks, flavoured milks & fruit juice.
🪥Limit treat foods to sometimes only.
🪥Avoid using your teeth as ‘tools’ for opening packets or biting nails.
For those who may not have taken up the opportunity this time around, I’m pleased to advise that after such a positive first-time experience for the dental van at St. Mary’s College, we will definitely see Smile Patrol back again soon.
