VET Pathways & Workplace Learning
I was really excited to see the Year 12s at the Valedictory Dinner – it was great to hear their successes over the few weeks since I had seen them – many had secured apprenticeships and accepted early offers from university. We have had great success with apprenticeships for our students; companies such as Westrac, Liehbherr, Bruce Rock Engineering, Mineral Resources, Brookes Hire, Hartfield Park and Mader just to name a few. We are super proud of you all and look forward to hearing about it all next year.
Just to repeat what was in the last newsletter - If you applied to TAFE then you should have received an email from me advising you of an offer – there was 5000 students who applied this year in Western Australian students - feedback received from TAFE was students who had work experience in the industry as well as excellent grades were the main contributing factors to being accepted into TAFE. Over the next few months all the ‘pieces of the puzzle’ will align and hopefully there will be placements for as many students as possible.
Next year we have students completing additional qualifications in areas of Electrical, Carpentry, Automotive, Nursing, Education Support, Civil Construction/Resource and Infrastructure Work Preparation, Autonomous Workplace operations and Marine Biology. We are very excited to have students being accepted in Barbering, Podcasting, Animation, Horticulture
WORKPLACE LEARNING
As we enter the last term, we have Year 11 General students attending Workplace Learning – I have received low number of WPL forms – please return them asap. WPL is an excellent opportunity for students to explore a range of industries allowing them to discover their passion or find another pathway.
Year 11 – Week 6 & 7 – Monday 11th to Friday 22nd of November
Tips for Getting an Apprenticeship
- If you want to work in a building trade you will need to travel from site to site. Get a driver’s license.
- Have an appropriate email address. Don’t put your school email address if you are about to leave school.
- If you change your phone number, let the potential employer know by email and by ringing them.
- Dress neatly for interviews in clothes appropriate for the job.
- It’s ok to be nervous.
- Research the business you want to work for. If you want them to be interested in employing you, you need to show you are interested in working for them.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback. This will help you in your next application and if another job comes up with this employer. Asking for feedback is hard but it will help them to remember you and they will know you are keen.
