2024 Sports Awards Night

The floor and stage of the gymnasium were magically transformed on Friday night for the 2024 Mazenod Sports Awards recognising students, coaches and volunteers for their contributions to another amazing year of sport.

Special guest, Greg Hire, was interviewed by Year 11 students Riley G & Elijah P. He shared stories of his long and successful NBL career and representing Australia in the FIBA World 3 on 3 Basketball Championships. Greg also provided an insight into his work throughout WA on mental health through his organisation called ‘A Stitch in Time’. It was entertaining, insightful, and provided the 360+ attendees with an inspiring message about mental health and athletes. Well done to Riley & Elijah for a very well conducted and entertaining interview.

Below are the major award winners from the night. Congratulations to these students and to all the students who were recognised for the outstanding contribution in school and community club sports and their state and national representation in their chosen fields.

I would like to thank all the staff, students and members of the Mazenod community who generously assisted in the preparation and running of our showcase of Mazenod sports.

Oblate Cricket 2024

Wednesday 30th of October 2024

Mazenod College v Kent Street Senior High School

On Wednesday, 30 October, Mazenod’s 1st X1 began their Oblate Cup 2024 campaign by travelling down the hill 4 a practice game against Kent Street Senior High School. Mazenod won the toss, and game day Co-Captain Riley G elected to bat.

Mazenod made a great score of 203 runs all out. Top run scorer was Micah A, who scored a very entertaining 61 runs off 59 balls with 5 big 6’s. He was well supported by Mitchell P, 40 runs, and game day Co-Captain Thomas B with 39 runs.

In the second innings, Kent S came out with an early conservative batting approach. Mazenod bowled relatively tightly, taking wickets on a consistent basis. Nate T starred with the ball, taking 4 wickets for 31 runs off his 8 overs, while also providing a crucial run out. Micah A (The Magician) was up to his usual tricks, taking a classy 2 wickets for 15 runs off his 6 overs, as the other wickets were spread around. Kent S went on to chase the 204 runs to win, with 9 wickets down, creating a brilliant tight contest for both teams.

Regardless of the result, it was a great game for the boys to play together for the first time and to try some students in different batting positions and bowling situations. The boys will continue to train on Monday afternoons during Term 4, before the much-anticipated Staff vs Student cricket match in Week 9, and then The Oblate Cricket Tour in Week 10.

Congratulations to Mitch!

A big congratulations to Mitch H who represented Mazenod impressively in Term 3 at the Fittest in WA CrossFit competition. Moving up to the Year 10-12 age group this year, he showcased incredible strength and determination, placing 2nd overall by a narrow margin and claiming 1st place in 3 out of 5 events—including a stunning 90kg clean and jerk! Well done, Mitch!

WA All Schools Triathlon

On Thursday, 31 October Mazenod competed at Champion Lakes for the annual WA All Schools Triathlon. We had 14 teams participate across Years 7-11 team events and 3 students who competed in the novice individual races. In very challenging hot conditions, the students who participated achieved some outstanding results, with many teams finishing in the top 10 of their age categories.

Some notable results were:

  • Year 11 Team – 2nd in the Age Category (Bailey B/Nick H/Riley G)
  • Year 9 Team – 3rd in Age Category (Ryder L/Charles W/Thomas D)

Many thanks to the parents who came along on the day and supported the students in their races. Also thanks to Mr Mason, Mr Devon and Mr Grabski for assisting the teams on the day.
