What's Been Happening in Prep

Prep Toy Incursion

On Tuesday in Week 1, our Prep students had an exciting opportunity to immerse themselves in the wonderful science of toys during our engaging Toy Incursion! The classroom buzzed with laughter and learning as students explored the fascinating world of energy, materials, movement, and sound through hands-on activities and group discussions.

Each student became a toy investigator, classifying and comparing toys based on various characteristics. This activity sparked curiosity and encouraged critical thinking as they discussed what makes each toy unique and how they work. They even experimented with spinning toys that drew intricate designs, combining art and science in a delightful way.

See below for some photos of our fun filled incursion!

Northern Metropolitan Region Athletics Championships Report

On Wednesday, 16th October, 10 of our talented athletes from Our Lady's Primary School competed at the Northern Metropolitan Region Athletics Championships. It was a wonderful spring day, perfect for athletics, and our students truly brought their best.

The students who represented our school were Scarlett D'Arro (4A), Bennett Broderick (4B), Yasmien Valeros (4B), Jaxon Ras (4C), Aidan Pearce (4D), Ryder Cardamone (4D), Josephine Ho (5A), Dante Pepe (5D), Chelsea McDonald (5D), and Nana Kwabena Tiboah (6A). Each competitor showed incredible enthusiasm and sportsmanship, giving their all in every event. We at Our Lady's are so proud of the dedication and effort these young athletes have put into their training and competitions. It was heartwarming to see their commitment and determination shine through.

A special thank you goes out to all the parents who came to support and cheer on our athletes. Your encouragement plays a huge role in their success, and we appreciate your presence and enthusiasm.

We are thrilled to congratulate Nana Kwabena Tiboah (6A), who has qualified for the Victorian State Athletics Championships in the 100m sprint, and Josephine Ho (5A), who will be competing in both the 800m and 1500m. They will represent Our Lady's Primary School at the state level on Wednesday, 6th November, at the Albert Park Athletics Track.

We wish Nana and Josephine the best of luck as they prepare for this exciting opportunity!

What's Been Happening in Year 5

Year 5 Visit to Werribee Zoo

5A - Mark & Nayan

Mark - Lions

We got to see some lazy lions sleeping on an old tractor. They were looking at us and looked kind of angry.  There were four female lions and one male, so we didn't get to see any lion cubs.

Nayan- Baby Rhinos

We went on the Safari Tour and my favourite part was seeing the Rhinos. I liked how there was a brand new baby there named Kipenzi. He was small and chubby but he didn’t have his horn yet. The mum was with him while he rolled around in the mud. I think the mud is like sunscreen for them.

5B -

Abraham - wild dogs

In the afternoon we saw the African wild dogs, there were only 3 in the enclosure because they are critically endangered. All three were siblings so they were really playful and cuddly with each other. We found out that they are really quiet when running which helps them to hunt their prey. The African wild dogs are actually some of the best hunters in Africa. The zookeepers have actually trained the wild dogs to open their mouths for dental checks so that they don’t get bitten.

Charlotte- Hippos

We got to see Hippopotamus twice in one day! On the safari tour and in their enclosure. Their enclosure was full of water for them to swim in along with some grass as well. Hippos have eyes at the front of their head which means that they are born to hunt. However, their diet consists mostly of grass because they are herbivores. We were told that the hippos are highly territorial so I’m not planning on swimming with them anytime soon! I really liked that they are big and scary but also very lazy.

5C

Samuel - monkeys

Early in the day, we went to the monkey enclosure to look at Vervet Monkeys. They are small, white monkeys that are omnivores (that means they eat plants and meat). They were walking and jumping all around their enclosure, it was really funny when two of them bumped into each other. They were all picking at each other's fur which is how they get clean. I think the  monkeys were my favourite animal to watch.

Therese- Emu

Before we ate our snacks, we walked past the Emus which weren’t even behind a fence. Scary! Emu have super long legs, blue heads and grey feathers. Did you know that they are the second largest bird in the world? A couple of the kids were so scared that they didn’t go anywhere near the Emu. I think that they were really cool when far away from me.

5D -

Chelsea - Meerkat lunch

After walking around in the morning, we stopped to eat our lunch. We were lucky enough to sit next to four meerkats in their enclosure while eating our lunch. They were really shy at first but after a while, they came closer and closer to us. They bobbed up and down like slinkies which was funny to watch. I loved how they walked on their hind legs and had floppy front paws. They were so cute and I really wanted to cuddle them until I found out that they can be aggressive predators!

Kaku- Skulls

Right before we went on the amazing safari bus, we got to see some skulls of African animals. We got to see a real zebra skull and some other replica skulls. The zookeeper taught us about the features of the skulls like where their eyes are and if that makes them a predator or prey. Zebras have eyes on the side which means they are born to hide and are prey. We were given a skull in groups that we needed to guess the animal it belonged to. My group guessed our type of monkey skull correctly! I loved Werribee Zoo much more than Melbourne Zoo!
