Our Role in this Busy World

I share the quote below from Pope Francis to highlight the important role we play in the well-being of those around us. As young men socialise and engage with one another they don’t always get it right. Social media as we know offers many avenues to communicate, with many of these avenues taking out the human element which quite often than not can lead to a negative interaction as a result. A key learning from these experiences is appreciating our impact on those around us and learning from this where necessary. We encourage our young men to reflect on their dialogue and engagement. Quite often the response is to trump the previous comment. As Pope Francis states how beautiful the world can be by the manner of our interactions.

Structure, routine, planned and organised:

To be truly ready for the demands that come our way having a solid and proven routine and plan are often key ingredients. With exams only around the corner for our Senior School students I encourage them to be conscious of what works well for them. Evaluate how you currently go about your business, if it is proving fruitful there are some key elements which clearly need to be continued. If you, however, are fully aware that you could be doing better it is then timely that you assess your own routines and structures in giving you the best chance to be organised and ready. Some tips below could help you unpack your own strategy.

  • Learning occurs during class time, so utilising the time is significant.
    • Ask questions.
    • Sit with those who will be a positive influence on your learning.
  • Set yourself time limits (both in and out of class) e.g. the next 15 minutes I’m going to sort my draft introduction without distraction.
  • Saving and organising resources and tasks efficiently, so you can refer to or use them when needed.
  • Success comes when we go the extra mile. Allocating time at home is a must. Touching base, the night before your next class will ensure you are ready and will take away any unwanted stress or anxiety. Alternatively, continuing with work that you found challenging the same day the class occurred is a great way to consolidate your understanding.
  • Good routine and preparation should not only be a focus within senior years, many good habits are cultivated within Years 7 to 9.
