Around the Secondary Classes

Outdoor Education
Last week, the Outdoor Ed classes visited Mount Field National Park as part of their buildup to their Walking Camp in Term 3. Cold, wet conditions were perfect as the students were able to practice their skills in keeping warm and comfortable in a challenging environment. There was enough sunshine to ensure that the Park radiated with its well-known beauty, and made the photography challenge a delightful focus as the students walked the Three Falls circuit. The students are looking forward to their three-day adventure doing the Freycinet circuit next term.
STRIVE - Term 2
During Term 2, our Year 8 students embarked on their STRIVE activity rotations. Through a wide variety of experiences, students were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, try something new, and enjoy some active fun.
The activity rotations this term included:
Orienteering
Fishing
Yoga
Self Defence
Cooking for Vinnies
City Rogaine
Each activity provided a unique opportunity for students to build resilience, learn new skills, and explore different aspects of Hobart in meaningful ways. Whether it was navigating the city streets with a map in hand, practicing mindfulness and movement through yoga, or preparing meals for those in need, students demonstrated curiosity, teamwork, and a willingness to give everything a go.
In Term 3, students will continue rotating through the activities, ensuring that everyone has a chance to experience each one. The STRIVE program will then begin preparing students for their Term 4 adventure: the much-anticipated camp and mountain walk - a highlight of the Year 8 experience.
We look forward to seeing our students continue to grow in confidence, connection, and capability as they take on the next stages of STRIVE.
Yr 9/10 Dance Elective
The Sydney Dance Company visited Mount Carmel this week, running a workshop for our Yr 9/10 Dance elective students. The students enjoyed learning some of the repertoire from the company's upcoming shor, momenta, which they will see live later this month.
They also participated in a choreographic workshop which challenged their understanding of how to create unique movement phrases.
Start Up Challenge Market Day
This week, our Year 9/10 Legal Studies and Business elective students wrapped up their business unit with the Start Up Challenge Market Day. Armed with just $20 in start-up capital, students launched small businesses as part of a six-week project, selling everything from rocky road, biscuits, and cake pops to handmade bracelets and face painting.
Students managed budgets, created marketing strategies, and worked in teams to bring their ideas to life. All profits - just under $2000 - will be donated to charities chosen by the students, supporting causes that matter to them.
Every stall sold out, and students gained firsthand insight into the challenges and rewards of running a business. It was an outstanding display of creativity, teamwork, and real-world learning.
English across the Years
This week, our Years 6 and 8 students enjoyed a fabulous afternoon with guest author Will Kostakis.
He had the students on the edge of their seats with his hilarious anecdotes about how he began writing fiction in primary school, and persevered until he finally got published.
Later he lead them in a game of heads and tails, playing for copies of his Young Adult novels.
Will generously gave us some signed copies of his novels for the library including; Stuff Happens, Monuments, Rebel Gods, The Sidekicks and We could be something.
These books are also available as ebooks on Sora (through the Library catalogue).
