Mural - By Keioni Lander

We acknowledge the Arrernte people as the traditional custodians and first educators of Mparntwe. Our school is home to students from nations all over this country, and all around the world.

We ‘strive’ to work with and continue learning from First Nations people.

We ‘seek’ to be a part of Australia’s reconciliation journey by engaging in truth-telling.

We aim to ‘care’ for Country through connection and environmental education.

We pay our respects to elders past and present and thank them for their care of Country and sharing of knowledge.

At the end of last term, artist Keoni Lander from Mulla Mulla Art completed this amazing mural. Keoni worked with students from our RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan) committee and they assisted Keoni during the process. Please read Keoni’s description and explanation of this wonderful addition to our campus.

Keioni Lander - Mulla Mulla Art

Two weeks ago I completed this gorgeous mural at St Philip's College here in Mparntwe.

I worked closely with a group of students that are part of the RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan) committee at the college. The goal was to design a mural that captured aspects of the Country around the school as a way to acknowledge and pay respect. Many of the elements included in the design were discussed by the students and myself.

The central meeting place represents the school, students and teachers. There are then many communities connecting that represent all the different people that come to the school. Some of the animal tracks throughout the mural include wallaby, dingo, lizard and bird tracks. These animals are just some of the many that they see around their school. The gum leaves symbolise cleansing and healing while the bright purple desert roses are a reminder of the beautiful flora surrounding the school.

There are so so many elements to this design that come together to create a gorgeous acknowledgment of Country.

Working so closely with the students was a true highlight. Especially them helping to paint some tracks! Such a special project.
