Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 Still Life inspired by Deanne Gilson

As part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations, Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 students created still life drawings inspired by Wadawurrung artist Deanne Gilson. They explored her use of native flowers, patterns and symbolism in her work, then sketched their own arrangements of Australian plants and flowers. Students focused on careful observation and detail in their drawings, using pencil, coloured pencil and oil pastel to develop their own compositions.

Foundation and Year 1/2 Yarning Sticks

To celebrate NAIDOC Week, Foundation and Year 1/2 students created their own Yarning Sticks, an activity inspired by the tradition of yarning circles, which are used to share stories and make connections within the community. Students selected sticks and decorated them with colourful yarn and wool, focusing on patterns and texture. Foundation students were supported by some helpful Year 5/6 buddies, who helped with tying knots and wrapping techniques. It was a great way to connect across year levels while learning about culture, community, and the importance of sharing stories.
