What's happening in our learning spaces?

FOUNDATION NEWS

Welcome back to Term 3! We hope you all had a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable break. It was wonderful to see everyone’s smiling faces as we returned to school, refreshed and ready for another exciting term of learning and events. Our learning spaces were quickly filled with energy and laughter as we shared stories from our holidays. Today marks day number 97 of Foundation- only three more days until our highly anticipated 100th Day celebrations! We can’t wait to see everyone dressed up. Please join us for a parade and presentation of certificates in the hall immediately after 9:00 a.m.

As writers, we had time and opportunity to reflect on our school holidays through drawing and writing. We wrote about who we saw, where we went, what we ate, what we played and our favourite moments. We have made such wonderful growth and progress in our writing and are remembering to use spaces, full stops, capital letters and familiar sight words. Many of us are now writing multiple sentences and recording more and more sounds and letters. Check out some of our awesome writing below!

As a faith community, we gathered in the Church on Friday to celebrate Grandparents Day with a special Mass. It was a beautiful occasion to honour and give thanks for the love, wisdom, and guidance our grandparents brought into our lives. Following Mass, our grandparents were invited into our learning spaces to take part in some fun activities. Together, we drew portraits, completed word searches, wrote heartfelt messages, and shared what makes our them so special to us. It was truly lovely having them with us, and we are so grateful!

Thank you all for taking the time to meet with us for the Student-Led Conversations on Thursday. It was a great to see the confidence and enthusiasm as students shared their learning goals and celebrated their successes!

YEAR 1/2

Welcome to Term 3! It has been wonderful to hear about all of the exciting experiences that the children enjoyed over the school holidays.

As readers, we have begun to explore narrative texts, and we will also be looking at creating narratives during writing sessions. This week, we are learning to identify the text structure of a narrative using a Story Mountain. You might like to use this when talking about texts with your children at home:

On Wednesday, we had a special visit from two officers from the Brunswick Police Station. They spoke to us about how to stay safe in our community. During their visit, we took part in discussions and watched videos and images that helped us learn more about important safety topics like recognising body clues, staying aware of our surroundings when walking in public, knowing which trusted adults to turn to in places like playgrounds, and what to do if we ever get lost. It was an engaging and valuable session that reminded us just how important it is to stay safe and be aware!

A friendly reminder to prepare your child's costume for the upcoming Dance Concert. Your child's teacher sent an email regarding this in Term 2. You can also refer to the table below:

YEAR 3/4

Welcome back to Term 3! I hope we all had a refreshing break and are ready for another exciting term ahead.

Once again, thank you to our parent community for attending our Learning Conversations last term. It was wonderful to see how proud our Year 3/4 students were to share their spelling, writing and maths learning with their families.

Well done to our students for participating in their second Sports Gala Day. All students showed great sportsmanship whilst playing Endball in mixed teams. Thank you to our Year 5/6 leaders for supporting us throughout the day.

Home Learning & SMART Spelling Expectations

Please continue to encourage your child to engage in their home learning weekly, especially their SMART spelling sheet. Your child needs to write every spelling word listed on the sheet each night to consolidate the spelling focus of the week. Every Friday, a spelling test is conducted in the classroom, so practice at home is vital.  A reminder that school diaries and SMART spelling sheets are handed to your child’s classroom teacher EVERY FRIDAY.  The home learning tasks have an assigned date listed on the top of the sheet for when home learning is required to be brought back to school.

Parent Helpers

Parents who would like to provide support in the learning spaces this term, please add your name and your child’s name to the timetable that has been shared via email from your child’s classroom teacher. If you wish to support during specialist classes, you are more than welcome to.

YEAR 5/6

Welcome back! We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break. It has been wonderful to reconnect and see everyone return with such positive energy and readiness for Term 3. Thank you for continuing to support our Home Learning and reading from the chapter book at home. It's been fantastic to see many students engaging in this. This ongoing routine is helping to build strong reading habits, fluency, and comprehension skills.

As mathematical thinkers, we have continued to explore fractions, focusing on adding and subtracting fractions with the same and different denominators. Students have been using number lines, fraction walls, and visual models to help them understand how fractions work in different contexts. We’re developing strategies to simplify, convert, and compare fractions as well.

As readers, we have begun exploring the novel "Can You See Me?" by Libby Scott and Rebecca Westcott. The story is written from the perspective of Tally, a girl who is autistic, as she navigates life, friendships, and being herself. As we begin reading, students have been making predictions about the characters and storyline, using the blurb, cover, and opening pages to infer what challenges and themes might emerge.

As inquirers, we acknowledged NAIDOC Week by engaging in reading the book “Walk with Us” by Adam Goodes. We reflected on the Country and how we can care for and look after it. We also reflected on the importance of looking after Country for future generations and the importance of acknowledging and respecting it in practice.

A friendly reminder: please prepare your child's costumes for the 'Dance till you drop' concert. Please see below for some inspiration.

Bottoms: Light/Blue Denim (can be shorts or jeans - if they do not have denim, light coloured pants will suffice). Tops: White t-shirt. Shoes: White sneakers (if your child does not own white sneakers, any will suffice)

Here are the answers for this week's Home Learning.

A New Start and a Big Serve: Maria’s Volleyball Adventure

During the Term 2 school holidays, our new student, Maria Diaz Vasquez from 5/6NT had the exciting opportunity to travel to Canberra to compete in a volleyball tournament. After a fun seven-hour bus ride, she and her teammates settled into camp, where they trained, competed, and enjoyed a range of activities. Maria described feeling a mix of emotions, nervous, excited, happy, and proud as the team prepared to play. Despite some tough matches against tall and talented opponents, Maria valued the experience, not just for the games but also for the friendships, fun camp activities, and lessons learned. “We learned to be kind, respectful, and that mistakes are okay,” she shared. It was a memorable experience full of learning and teamwork. Well done Maria!

We are excited for a term full of learning, growth, and connection.
