Round the classes

Reception: Katie

The Reception class have been very busy welcoming our new friends to our class. We have been busy learning new sounds in phonics as well as doing some get to know you activities. In maths we have been learning about measurement and last week we discovered who has the longest name. We have also been learning about the meaning of gratitude and establishing what we are grateful for. This term we are extremely excited to be working with Stephen's class every Thursday afternoon where we are learning about what Geography is and how to make maps. We have also been enjoying some fun activities with the kindy which has been amazing. Can't wait to show you some photos later in the term.

Reception and Year 1: Jaya

We are excited to begin lots of new learning this term, especially in our Inquiry unit all about animals! We’ll be diving into information texts to discover and write about interesting animal facts and create our own animal habitats. In Literacy, we’ve started exploring split vowel digraphs, while in maths we’ve launched into the engaging topic of Measurement.

Measurement is always a favourite, as it connects so closely to our everyday lives. We’ve started by exploring length, learning about word families such as short, shorter, shortest and using vocabulary such as long, narrow, wide, tall. One lesson took us outdoors, where we found natural materials to compare and order, using our new vocabulary with our peers. The hands-on learning has been lots of fun and we’re looking forward to learning more about mass, capacity and duration as the term continues.

Year 1/2: Kelly

In maths our year 1/2 students have been busing exploring capacity and learning how much different objects and containers can hold. Through lots of hands-on activities, they compared which containers hold more or less, ordered items from smallest to largest capacity, and made predictions before measuring different cups, spoons and different sized containers, using informal units such as counters, marbles, and unifix cubes.

The students have enjoyed experimenting with a variety of materials and working together to investigate their ideas. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity and confidence grow and making real-life connections by noticing examples of capacity at home and around school – like their drink bottles, the bath, kitchen sink and even the pool.

This week, we’re focusing on using everyday language to describe capacity, such as full, half-full and empty.

Year 2/3: Emma

Welcome back to another exciting term! It was a buzzing exchange of holiday experiences the first week back and we had a chance to share our stories with each other. A special welcome to our two new students starting this term; Marcela and Maggie. Everyone has made them feel so comfortable and appreciated within the class.

So much engagement has been achieved this fortnight, including our novel study in Literacy, Charlotte’s Web, ‘Skip Counting and Place Value in Maths, ‘Special Events and Festivals’ in HASS and ‘Our Identity’ in Health.

We have enjoyed reconnecting with our wonderful library this week. Student’s have borrowed and listened to some much-loved stories- one that sparked their interest was a book about honesty. This brought out some interesting, relatable stories about owning up and telling the truth!

Year 3/4: Stephen

For maths the students have started learning about chance and probability.  This has entailed learning the vocabulary for the topic: likely, unlikely, certain, less likely and equal to.

The vocabulary is then applied to some tasks that reinforce the learning.  The students have also explored the concept of ratios in chance using coloured counters (see the pics).  The students have started learning about Geography, with areas of focus including investigating places in Australia, using cartographic conventions for maps and looking at how humans use resources and places.  The students support the receptions from Katie's class in this area.

Year 4/5: Rachael

Our unit on persuasive writing using the Seven Steps to Writing Success is off to a great start. Students have been working to improve samples of text using persuasive devices such as show don’t tell, the rule of three, alliteration, emotive language and facts and statistics. Researching, brainstorming and sharing ideas have all been successful strategies to help students to improve their writing.

So instead of saying “Everyone should learn to cook because cooking is fun” Jemima has bumped up her writing using show don’t tell:

“With a pot in my hand I laugh. My brother walks into the kitchen and “SQUIRT!” I spurt tomato sauce into his face and we both howl with laughter. Sizzle! Oops I just burnt the pancakes, they’re black and taste like charcoal. As I scrape the remains of the pancakes from the pan my brother pours more white gloopy batter into the pan. He goes to flip the bubbly golden disk, but it lands on my face! Without cooking, life would be boring.”

Year 5/6: Sallie

Welcome back to another busy term.  We have continued our focus on the Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe and really spending a lot of time connecting the text. For instance, today we had to delve into the character or personality traits of the beavers and then find evidence in the novel to support our ideas. Sharing this ideas helps students see things from different points of views. In spelling our focus has been on the phoneme "or" which is made up of many different graphemes (letter combinations) to make up this sound. Also in English we have been working on the importance of note taking and how good notes can help us make an affective information report.  Which brings us to our research assignment on BIRDS! Everyone has to choose to birds - one from Australia and One from Asia. We are conducting a comparative study examining features, habitats, and environmental impacts that may influence bird populations and their habitats, among other factors. This well eventually lead us to an exhibition night.  Still lots of other events to come (book week, knockout football and basketball, choir performance and lighning carnival). Please listen to our latest podcast. Arlo, Callum and Ellie K are chatting about some of the activities the Year 4s and Year 6's do while Year 5s and some Year 6s are in choir.
