Year Three

What a busy and exciting few weeks it has been in Year 3! The children have been fully immersed in our Unit of Inquiry, diving deeper into our central idea with curiosity and enthusiasm. From thought-provoking discussions, it's been wonderful to see their understanding develop and their confidence flourish as inquirers. We’re so proud of the effort and engagement they’ve shown—keep reading to find out more about what we’ve been up to!

Reading:

In Reading, Year 3 students have been diving into a variety of non-fiction texts, with a special focus on those linked to technology and digital systems. They’ve been developing their skills in identifying key features of non-fiction, such as headings, diagrams and glossaries, while also building their vocabulary by spotting and discussing words related to technology.

Writing:

In Writing, Year 3 students have been exploring the world of coding through hands-on experiences with Bee-Bots. After learning how to give clear, step-by-step instructions to program these fun little robots, students used their experiences to plan and write explanation texts. They focused on using sequencing words, technical vocabulary, and clear sentence structure to explain how Bee-Bots work and how to code them. It’s been fantastic to see students connect their practical learning with their writing skills, developing both digital literacy and the ability to inform and explain through text.

Maths:

In Maths, Year 3 students have been busy collecting and analysing data on screen time as part of our inquiry into the impact of technology. They learned how to organise their findings using tables and graphs, and used this data to identify patterns and discuss possible effects of screen time on their daily lives. Alongside this, students have been developing a range of mental strategies to solve multiplication facts efficiently. They’ve been using strategies such as skip counting, doubling, and using known facts to solve unfamiliar problems with growing confidence. Students also dove into the fascinating world of numbers with the Fibonacci sequence! From the spiral patterns of sunflowers to the growth of rabbit populations, we explored how this simple sequence appears in nature, art, and beyond. A fun and eye-opening way to see math in the world around us!

Reminders:

A quick reminder that Book Week is coming up on Friday, 22nd August! This year’s theme is "Book an Adventure", and we’re inviting students to come dressed as a favourite book character or something inspired by an exciting reading adventure. We’re looking forward to a fun day filled with stories, creativity, and a celebration of the joy of reading!
