Year Two

Reading

In Reading, students explored the works of author-illustrator Bob Graham to strengthen their reading comprehension and make personal connections with stories. They learned how to use pictures to understand characters' feelings and uncover deeper meanings beyond the words. Students shared their own experiences and responded creatively by designing their own garden scenes inspired by the story. Afterwards, they brought their drawings to life outdoors using chalk, turning the grey concrete yard into a colourful “concrete garden” filled with flowers, sunshine, and imagination. This joyful activity encouraged creativity, collaboration, and thoughtful reflection on how small actions can brighten a community. Throughout the unit, students also practised reading with fluency, taking turns with partners and giving feedback to one another. They discussed similarities and differences between different stories and grew more confident in expressing their thinking.

Writing

In Writing, students focused on crafting recounts based on their weekend adventures and a recent excursion to the crocodile park. They experimented with strong leads—such as using sounds or vivid descriptions—to draw the reader in. Students revised and edited their work, adding detail with adjectives and action verbs. They also explored how to respond to image prompts in their Writer’s Notebooks, building full paragraphs from a single idea. As they shared their work with peers and gave suggestions to one another, students strengthened both their writing skills and their confidence.

Maths

In Maths students have been exploring the connection between multiplication and division and learning how to use their strategies for one to help with the other. They have used 'Fact Families' to see the connection between the two operations discovering that if they know one multiplication fact, they can solve the related division facts without any extra working out.

Inquiry

On Tuesday the 5th of August the Year Two's went for a walk to the Crocodile Park as a provocation for our new Unit of Inquiry. Students used their five senses to record the things they noticed within the environment.

Our new unit focuses on exploring the varied geographical features of our world (such as beaches, rivers, lakes, mountains and more!). As well as developing an understanding of how and why people live in these environments. Students have begun generating questions about these topics demonstrating their curiosity.
