Celebrating Book Week

Next week, schools across Australia will celebrate Children’s Book Week. This year’s theme is Symphony of Stories, which is a wonderful reminder of the many different stories, voices, characters and ideas that books can bring into children’s lives.

At Balambalam, Book Week is a special opportunity to continue building our reading culture. Since the launch of our school library, it has been exciting for students to begin borrowing books, exploring different authors, discovering new interests and enjoying time with stories.

Books play an important role in children’s learning. They help students build vocabulary, develop imagination, learn about different people and places, and make connections to the world around them. Stories also support students to think deeply, ask questions and share ideas with others.

Book Week is not only about dressing up or celebrating favourite characters, although these moments can be lots of fun. It is also about celebrating the joy of reading and helping students see themselves as readers.

Families can help continue the excitement of Book Week by creating small moments for reading at home. This might include sharing a favourite story, visiting the local library, talking about a book your child has enjoyed, reading in your home language, or allowing your child to choose a book that sparks their interest. When children have choice and positive experiences with books, their love of reading can continue to grow.

We look forward to celebrating Book Week with our students and continuing to grow a strong reading culture at Balambalam, where every child can feel seen, supported and successful as a learner.
