Rural Health Workshop

Some of the Year 10 and 11 students took part in a workshop run by students from the University of Wollongong. During the workshop students investigated a number of career opportunities under the 'health' banner including occupational therapist, speech pathologist, dietitian, social worker, physiotherapist, radiographer, pathology collector, pharmacist, paramedic, nurse, doctor, health promotion, exercise physiologist, and dentist.

In groups, students had to workout how to button up a shirt with their eyes closed, using only one hand and helpful instructions from their peers. They put their first aid and communication skills to the test treating each other for snake bites and going through the motions of calling an ambulance. They were forced to reflect on their own understanding of heathy food choices and dissect the action of swallowing (there are 4 steps to this). Finally, they completed a number of reflex test on each other.

The workshop was a hands on, insightful experience that helped students understand the variety of work within the various health sectors.
