Times Tables Rock Stars

This week our students in Year 2-6 took part in the national OZ Rocks, times table competition . The competition ran from Tuesday 17th- Thursday 19th, allowing all students 1 hour a day to earn as many points as possibly whilst practising their multiplication facts.

White Gum Valley were the 25th highest scoring primary school out of 117 that took place country wide, and were the 2nd highest scoring primary school in Western Australia. A fantastic effort and achievement!

Individual certificates will be awarded to the 25 students who contributed the most points at Monday’s morning meeting. We are so proud of all of our students efforts and the progress we are seeing them make with their speed and recall of their tables facts.

Gwenyth Ewens Art Competition Award

Gwenyth Ewens (1916 -1995) was passionate about Fremantle, Architecture and Art. She was a leading individual in her field and was awarded a Fellowship to the Lighting Engineers of Australia. Gwenyth both donated and bequeathed a large sum of money to the Fremantle City Council.

She had a wish to help young children appreciate their unique architecture and home surroundings. At the same time, she hoped to inspire them to take up artistic professions. At her suggestion Gwenyth’s donations were used to set up an inaugural art competition for Fremantle youth.

This year’s interschool art exhibition continues to celebrate her historic Fremantle and its architecture. The focus is on Year 5 and 6 students from both Government and Private Schools, showcasing their varied art skills and understanding of heritage.

The exhibition fosters a shared experience of creativity and a richness of styles.  It also gives our student artists the ability to display their works within the wider community.

The recent exhibition was held in the Fremantle Town Hall gallery-space in Fremantle. Each of the participating schools had two students chosen for special art prizes. Our school also received a special commendation from the judges.

The results of the exhibition are as follows: -

School Competition Winners of gift vouchers for art supplies are Emilia and Charley. Special commendation from judges to Lily.

Congratulations to the above students and our dedicated year 5/6 students who represented our school and participated in this prestigious competition. A proud mention also needs to go to Stewart Alger who set up and ran this year’s annual event so smoothly. Stewart is a Fremantle local history librarian and one of our parents (Eloise and Freddie).

Many thanks from Ms Henderson and our proud staff and parents for your wonderful efforts, Billie, Nieve, Steve, Caroline, Gus, Abi, Lily, Charley, Kira, Nancy, Isabella, Frankie, Emilia, John, Mabel, Persia, Liam, Ella, Biara, Emmy, Marlon and Myla.

Some art samples of our historic local architecture created by visual arts students also in Year 5/6 also will be included. These images were completed to be displayed in the art room setting.

Room 6

On a very hot 34’day, Room 6 were lucky enough to have a Rugby Clinic along with the other Junior Primary Classes. We have some very enthusiastic emerging rugby players in our class who were very keen to showcase their skills. It was a lot of fun.

Thank you to Ms Foster & Mr Truong for organising this incursion for us.

Rugby Clinic

On Monday and Tuesday the school was treated to a rugby clinic from RugbyWA, just in time for the Rugby World Cup semi-finals. Students from pre-primary to year 6 practiced some new skills, learning how to pass, evade and score tries before putting their skills to the test in some fun games. Thank you to Nick from RugbyWA for making it such a fun day. Special thanks to John, Hamish's dad, for helping to organise this clinic with RugbyWA, all of the students greatly appreciated the fun incursion.

Market Day

This week we held our school Market Day. Each class made products with a sustainability focus to sell at the market and ran their own stalls, applying their financial mathematics skills.

At our Pre-Primary - Year 2 event in the morning we had spa products, heat packs and handmade Christmas cards and decorations. Later in the afternoon our older students sold pet products, products made from yarn and products made from recycled paper.

The event was a huge success raising $1794.40 for our school grounds!

Scitech Lighthouse Maths

On Tuesday evening, White Gum Valley hosted a math problem solving event For Year 2- 6, hosted by SciTech; The  Mystery of the Mathematical Menace.

Students and their families were challenged to solve problems to help them to find clues and help them to find the culprit of them crime.

This event was in conjunction with The Lighthouse Maths project, which Mrs Walker and Ms Foster have been taking part in this year. The program involves upskilling teachers in the teaching of Powerful Problem Solving and giving our students opportunities to increase their resilience and confidence with challenging mathematical problems.

The event was fun and engaging, and a wonderful opportunity for our students to show their adults their problem solving skills!

Recent world events have led to some concerns regarding distressing online content finding its way onto student screens and devices.

It is normal to be concerned about what our children may see and we recognise that keeping families free from harm on the internet is very important.

The eSafety Commissioner provides some important guidelines and resources to help ensure that online spaces stay safe for everyone. We encourage you to visit the website to look at the resources available. We’ve also attached a fact sheet that you might find useful should your child see distressing content online.
