Grade 4 Community News
Welcome, dear parents, to the newest edition of our school newsletter! The year is progressing very swiftly, and we have finally made it past the halfway mark through the term. Our students have been working extremely hard towards achieving their learning goals, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to learning and personal growth.
READING
In our Reading lessons, students have just begun their captivating journey to discover the history and cultures of early and medieval African kingdoms, providing them with an enriching and eye-opening experience. The students will have the opportunity to explore the geographic settings of Africa, as well as the important kingdoms there; for example, The Kingdoms of Kush and Aksum. Students will be using this unit to strengthen their knowledge of literal and inferred meanings in texts as well as compare language features throughout their readings. Our focus words for our vocabulary lessons have come from the serial text ‘Indian in the Cupboard’. Furthermore, in Week 6 Morphology, students will be learning about the suffixes -al, -ish and -ive, and will explore how the meaning of the words changes upon the addition of the suffixes.
WRITING
In our Writing lessons, students have begun their unit on information reports. They are using their knowledge from our Reading 2 Learn unit ‘Early and Medieval African Kingdoms’. It has been very satisfying to see students building on their knowledge from their explanation report unit earlier this year. They have started off this unit by learning about the structure and language features included in an information report by analysing different writing samples from their ‘Bump It Up’ wall. They have also been unpacking a student-friendly rubric, using this to identify what they know so far and what they still need to work on. They will then use this information to pick a goal that they will work on throughout the unit.
MATHS
In our Maths lessons, we have started our measurement and geometry unit, focusing on mass, capacity, and volume. The students will be experimenting with measuring and comparing masses and capacities of objects using familiar metric units. Furthermore, they will be learning to convert from one unit to another to compare different quantities and measurements. Students will also be using these skills to problem-solve in our maths lessons.
REMINDERS
In Terms 1 and 4, all students must have a Tarneit Rise hat to wear at recess and lunch. Hats are available to purchase from the office if your child needs one.
Attendance
It is crucial that all students are attending school every day so they can work on their learning goals and don’t miss important lessons. Please book holidays during school holiday periods rather than during the school term to make sure valuable learning time is not missed.
Events
Between the 8th and 17th of November, all Grade 4s attended an excursion to the You-Yangs Regional Park. We will consolidate our knowledge of the colonisation of Australia, as well as exploring the area’s flora and fauna with a park ranger.
